As group chief executive of Goffs, Henry Beeby has spent his career at the heart of the Thoroughbred sales business, following in the footsteps of his late father, Harry Beeby, while becoming one of the industry's most recognisable auctioneers in his own right.In the latest installment of Words to Live By, TDN's Gary King asks Beeby about the people who have shaped his career, the advice from his father that has stayed with him and the qualities he believes matter most for anyone starting out in the Thoroughbred industry.TDN: Outside of family, who has been the most important mentor in your career, and why?Henry Beeby: Obviously, the biggest mentor of my life and career was my Dad, Harry, who taught me so much. But apart from him, there are several people who have advised, helped and guided me, including Ken Oliver, co-founder of DBS and a great auctioneer; Timmy Hyde of Camas Park and a director of DBS for so long; David and Trish Brown at Furnace Mill Stud; Terence Collier at Fasig-Tipton, as well as John Finney and Larry Ensor from Fasig; the brilliant South African auctioneer Clive Gardner; and many more.In fact, I've been blessed to have been helped by so many people and wish I could name more.TDN: What is the best piece of advice you've ever received, and who gave it to you?HB: Dad gave me many bits of wonderful advice, but there are three that resonated most:“As auctioneers, all we have is our integrity, which takes years to build and one stupid mistake to lose, so guard it carefully.”“You'll only have what you earn, so work hard.”“You only go down this road once, so enjoy it.”TDN: What advice would you give to a young person starting out in the Thoroughbred industry today?HB: Listen to everyone, as you will learn something from everyone you meet.
