Javier Aguirre has been appointed as the new head coach of Valencia on a contract that will run until the end of the campaign. Aguirre arrives at the Estadio de Mestalla following a two-year stint in charge of Mexico, who he led to the round of 16 at this summer's World Cup. The 67-year-old's deal contains an option for him to remain at the helm for a second season in Valencia, who have made a dismal start to 2026-27. Valencia are 19th in LaLiga with four points from their opening seven games, with Carlos Corberan sacked just two months after extending his deal until 2028. Oscar Sanchez took interim charge and helped Valencia to their first win of the season against Alaves, before overseeing a 3-2 defeat to Real Sociedad last Sunday. Aguirre arrives with plenty of experience. He has managed 468 matches in LaLiga, the fifth-highest total of any foreign coach in the history of the competition. He was unable to end Mexico's wait for a first quarter-final appearance since 1986, after they were beaten 3-2 by 10-man England on home soil.The defeat was Mexico's first at the Azteca in a competitive match for 13 years, since losing to Honduras in a qualifier for the 2014 World Cup, while it was the first time they had conceded three goals at the venue since a 4-3 triumph over Brazil in August 1999.But Aguirre will now turn his attention back to club football, having last been in charge of Mallorca, who he helped avoid relegation from LaLiga in 2021-22. Aguirre also led Mallorca to the Copa del Rey final in 2024, but they were beaten on penalties by Athletic Club before he parted ways with the club that summer.His first home game in charge will come against Athletic on October 17, but he will make his bow for Valencia six days earlier, away to Racing de Santander.
