With 10 days of selling down and just two days to go, Keeneland September wrapped up Book 5A Thursday showing no signs of slowing down as the momentum continued from a strong opening week.“There were a bunch of the same people still shopping [Thursday] in Book 5A that you saw at the beginning of sale,” said Headley VanMeter, consignor of the day's topper. “It's great breeders and it's great for sellers. It might be [difficult] for sellers to still be around here this long, but we love to see it.”Marking it's fourth consecutive day with across-the-board gains, Keeneland sent 311 horses through the ring for gross sales of $14,219,000, a 13.16% boost from the same session one year when 298 yearlings brought in $12,565,000. The average jumped 8.43% to $45,720 while the median also rose 6.67% to $32,000.With just two sessions remaining in Book 5B, 2,338 horses have sold for an average of $224,936 and a median of $125,000 while grossing $525,899,500, a 5.14% boost over the same time last year.VanMeter Sales led up a colt (hip 3466) by top young sire Vekoma midway through the session where he sold to Pin Oak Stud for $260,000.“I can't imagine how often Pin Oak has been shopping in Book 5A,” VanMeter said. “It's an incredible result to get.”Headley VanMeter | KeenelandOut of a winning Take Charge Indy mare, the colt is only the third foal from the dam who has one winner from one to race under her produce record, a 3-year-old Mo Town colt named Kokomo Joe. The family includes SW/GISP Shop Till You Drop (Thunder Gulch) and her daughter, SW/MGSP Competitive Speed (Competitive Edge).“We were ecstatic to bring a horse like that here,” said Headley VanMeter, consignor of the day's session topper. “He was prepped by Judy Hicks over at Brookstown Farm and she did an extraordinary job with him. He came here very well prepared. We were hoping we were going to be a big fish in there today. Over the last few days, he was very well received and did everything right.”Trainer Ken McPeek, who finished as the day's leading buyer with five, picked up two of the top three hips with a Maclean's Music colt (hip 3288) from the family of Tapit and a filly by Complexity (hip 3546) both bringing $210,000 apiece.“The theme for this sale has been, if you have the right pedigree and the right physical, then [buyers] don't miss those kind of horses,” VanMeter said. “Those horses don't fall through the cracks.
