A teacher gets the class she is given. A kid gets whoever is standing at the front of the room in September. Neither of them picked it, and they have until June. What happens in between runs on kindness or it doesn’t run at all.The part that matters goes unrecorded. There is no box on a report card for letting a kid hand in a note instead of homework because you can see he is drowning and will not say it out loud, or for the afternoon somebody shelved the work and took twenty-six children outside because it was warm. Those were not lessons. That was kindness, and nobody logged it.A 2011 meta-analysis by Debora Roorda and colleagues, published in the American Educational Research Association’s Review of Educational Research, pooled 99 studies and found that the teacher-student relationship predicts how engaged a child is.
