I want to see more Anthony Gordon. Obviously, he started the season brilliantly with Barcelona.“But I would like to see someone who can control the game a little bit more in midfield at some point. I’m a big fan of Tyler Morton. “Maybe he’s not quite at the level yet, because England do have some great midfield players. And that’s the good thing about Tyler Morton. Rice struggled to have the impact he wanted in England’s World Cup campaignGetty“He can make great passes in front of the defence, and he can make great passes like 35 yards, 30 yards from the opposition goal as well.“So he has both those things. I think given that Rice is more experienced, to have someone to guide him through it would be quite useful as well. “I don’t know if it would work, but I just think to give England the option of controlling games a bit better, which is something that they didn’t do at the World Cup at all, as I said, the results were largely good. “I didn’t feel the content of the games was particularly good, and I don’t think the results can hide what needs to be improved.“It sort of feels like England are in a not dissimilar place to where France were coming out of Euro 2024, I think, in that you think, yes, some of the football was a bit tatty, and they got away with it.“They’ve got to find a way to move away from that, I think, and to sort of increase the possibilities of them being able to see the Euros over the line in 2028.”Lyon’s Champions League exitEngland’s overseas players, bar the ones at Barcelona and Real Madrid, largely fall under the radar for most fans because they’re not playing in the Premier League.Morton further lost a potential opportunity to showcase himself when Lyon missed out on a place in the league phase of the Champions League following their playoff defeat to Fenerbahce.Brassell admitted to talkSPORT: “It’s not helpful for him, clearly, but on the other hand, he is going to be in a team that’s going to be a contender for all the competitions it’s in.“I’m not saying they can win Ligue 1, but they’re certainly in the mix for the top three. “I think they’re a contender for the Europa League, if not quite the favourites there, kind of in that A-minus favourites place, I suppose.Morton was unable to prevent Lyon’s defeat across two legsGetty“Of course, there’s the Coupe de France as well, so I think he is in a good position to be competitive.“He’s still working with other very good midfielders. Of course, there’s Corentin Tolisso, but Mads Bidstrup, who’s come in, looks really good as well.“If we’re talking about someone who can do that box-to-box sort of business as well, and who can also sit and let Morton go forward when he wants to, if we’re talking about how a relationship between Morton and Declan Rice might work, I think that’s maybe an interesting template for that as well.“There’s plenty of space for him to develop, even though ideally it would have been in the Champions League.”
