Moviment Graffitti and Friends of the Earth Malta have doubled down on their calls for Planning Authority CEO Johann Buttigieg to be removed from office, following their direct action at a planning conference in St Julian’s this morning.Activists disrupted The Citizen, the Environment and Development conference, where Buttigieg was participating in a discussion on citizens’ rights in development. Planning Minister Jonathan Attard was also present as protesters wearing pig masks and carrying “Korrotti Barra” placards staged their action.The organisations are demanding Buttigieg’s immediate removal as PA CEO and want him barred from holding other public office. Their calls follow scrutiny over published chats between Buttigieg and businessman Yorgen Fenech, as well as revelations that Buttigieg owns a private planning and architecture consultancy.The groups also criticised the conference itself, arguing that an event centred around citizens and the environment did not include citizens’ groups or environmental organisations. They further took aim at the decision to hold it at db Group’s hotel in St Julian’s.The action follows a letter sent to Prime Minister Robert Abela by 11 environmental and residents’ organisations, calling for Buttigieg’s removal and an independent investigation into his conduct.The campaign is set to continue on Saturday 26th September at 10am, when the organisations plan to reiterate their demands for Buttigieg’s removal and greater integrity within Malta’s planning system.•
