Andy Robertson has shed light on his decision to join Tottenham Hotspur and the conversations he had with Roberto De Zerbi prior to his move.Robertson was the first signing of the summer window and of the Roberto De Zerbi era at Tottenham, kicking off an extremely busy summer window, which saw 10 new players arrive through the doors at Hotspur Way.The 32-year-old was initially expected to join Spurs in a £3m deal in January, but the deal collapsed, with the left-back eventually deciding to make the move to North London after running down his Reds contract. While Robertson has featured regularly for the Lilywhites since his switch, it has not been the sort of start to the season that either he or his teammates would have hoped for, with Spurs sitting at the bottom of the table after five matches.Credit: @thatfootballphotog / InstagramAndy Robertson admits he was nervous watching Tottenham’s relegation battleThe experienced defender has now confessed that the North London club first came in for him in January, but revealed that leaving Liverpool mid-season was never part of his plans.Andy Robertson confessed that he was nervous watching Tottenham involved in a relegation battle, knowing that he wanted to join the club in the summer. The Scotsman told The Overlap: “I’d say probably January time [I knew my time at Liverpool was ending]. I nearly left in January, but I didn’t want to leave [then], but Tottenham came in for me. “Obviously, they were bang in trouble at that point. It was never in my plan to leave in January. I had six months left, and I had the World Cup and things like that, so I was more that I need to just look to that.“But in January time, it started becoming real that I was going to leave, and that’s when I came to peace with it, really.”“It was always Tottenham, as long as they stayed up! At that point, I didn’t quite want to go to the Championship. So that was the thing, I ended up then getting invested in Tottenham, I was like watching them.“Especially when De Zerbi came in, I was fully confident. But yeah, as long as they stayed up, it was always going to be Tottenham. “They showed their interest first, and they really wanted me, and I was happy with how much they wanted me.”Robertson believes in the quality of Spurs’ squadThe defender revealed that his conversations with De Zerbi convinced him the Tottenham project would be the right one for him.Robertson insisted that he fully believes in the quality that Spurs have in their squad, and he fully expects the team to get better as the season goes on.The 32-year-old continued: “I spoke directly to the manager. We had a couple of video calls over the summer. He’s super ambitious, you can tell that as a manager. He wants to be able to win trophies, he wants to be competing and things like that, and he knows it will take time, but he also knows that we need to start showing it sooner rather than later.“He believes in the squad, and I believe in the squad. If you look at our squad, even when I’m looking at the team we played against Liverpool in the cup, and then you look at the bench, in every position you’ve got so much quality, and you’ve got so many good players, it’s just we all need to show it as one, instead of maybe a bit of individual quality or whatever.“I think we just need a little bit of luck, and we need a little bit more of forgetting about the past and how we need to move forward. I do think as the season goes and goes and goes, we’ll get better and better.”READ MORE: Tottenham just need to be patient as Savio tops Premier League charts for two big statsThe post ‘It was always Tottenham’ – Andy Robertson reveals why he supported Spurs last season appeared first on Spurs Web.
