The initiative was launched on July 7 by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The campaign saw participation from government departments, local bodies, schools, colleges, resident welfare associations (RWA), NGOs and citizens, according to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO). Ms. Gupta said the achievement was the result of sustained efforts to expand Delhi’s green cover and strengthen its ecosystem. “The government’s aim is to build a city where development and environmental protection move forward together,” she said. Special plantation drives were carried out in the Central Ridge, DDA Ridge and South Ridge areas, where 24,94,505 saplings were planted. The campaign also saw public participation through a slot-booking facility, which received 1,89,116 bookings. Of these, 1,47,095 citizens participated in the drive and planted 3,56,986 saplings, the CMO stated. Ms. Gupta said attention would also be given to the protection and maintenance of the saplings. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the participation of citizens, RWAs, students, NGOs and other institutions had turned the campaign into a people’s movement.
