FAIRYHOUSE, Ireland — Less than a week after high-profile graduate Nabati (Night Of Thunder) flew the flag for Forenaghts Stud with victory in the G2 Mill Reef Stakes, a Study Of Man colt bred by Tony Smurfit's famous nursery set pulses racing at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale when selling to Paddy Twomey on behalf of Bond Thoroughbreds for €330,000. To say the Study Of Man colt stood out in the sale would be an understatement. Fairyhouse had been abuzz since Tuesday with just about everyone throwing in their tuppence worth about what the colt might make in the ring. In the end, it was quite a pretty penny – roughly €40,000 less than the previous £325,000 record price paid for a Teofilo colt when this sale took place at Newmarket in 2020 due to Covid. “Oh my god, it's unbelievable,” Forenaghts Stud manager Caoimhe Doherty beamed whilst fighting back the tears. “Totally unexpected. He is a beautiful horse, so I am absolutely thrilled, especially for everyone on the farm. We have always done well here; it's been a lucky sale for us, and good horses have come out of it. Over the moon. I lost count after 200 views.”She added, “I'm a bit shocked! This has been a dream week. First with Nabati winning the Mill Reef and now this, I'm actually shocked. I'm so thrilled. Tony and his wife Sharon have been in the game a long time and have worked really hard at this. It's so good for them that they're finally being rewarded. I'm thrilled for the farm and all the team; we're only a small team but everyone works so hard.”The Study Of Man was said to be the standout horse in this year's sale by many a shrewd judge. And so it proved. Not only did he have the looks, but he boasted an emerging pedigree to match, with his brother, Minkaas (Minzaal), finishing fourth in the Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster last month. Doherty continued, “Tony really wanted to use Study Of Man – he's a horse we followed for a while and we bought one in training a few years ago and had a lot of fun with it. Luceita (Dawn Approach), who we bought from the Godolphin draft a few years ago, has been nothing but good to us. We thought it was a good cross on paper and it's worked. Then we got the update as well – everything just came together.”Asked if she was expecting somewhere in the region of €330,000, Doherty replied, “Absolutely not! I thought he might make €100,000 and a little bit with it. Obviously I'm biased, I love all our yearlings, but it's so nice when other people like them too. I hope he's a star, I really do.” It was Twomey, bidding online, who saw off Jason Walsh, who works closely with Amanda Skiffington, on the Study Of Man colt. The trainer said, “I have only ever had one Study Of Man and that was Deepone, who was the stallion's first winner and obviously won the Beresford Stakes three years ago this weekend. He was a highly talented horse and I am delighted to have secured this colt.”Twomey added, “Charlie Bond is doing a fantastic job and has great enthusiasm for the game. He has a good colt, City Of Dubai (Mehmas), who could run in the Beresford Stakes, which he sponsors [Churchill Tyres]. We have an aligned vision and Charlie is backing me to try and achieve our goals.
