Former Chelsea and Manchester City man Shaun Wright-Phillips has backed Tottenham to improve this season but offered an interesting explanation for what is currently holding them back from a top-four finish.A top-four finish will feel like a distant dream for Tottenham Hotspur at the moment, with Roberto De Zerbi’s side sitting rock bottom of the Premier League table, after picking up just two points from their opening five games.De Zerbi remains confident that Tottenham’s results will improve with time and that the near £400 million spent during the summer transfer window will eventually bear fruit.Fixating on where Spurs will finish based solely on their current position would be harsh, though, as they are actually only 7 points away from the 4th position. Moreover, for large parts of the season so far, Tottenham have been the better side in their matches. They have finished with more expected goals (xG) and created more chances than their opponents in all but two of their games in all competitions this season. Manchester United and Tottenham were left out of his four.Explaining his choices, Wright-Phillips said: “I think City get in there, because they have the qualities to win games. City will definitely be in there. Arsenal is just a banker for me, because they’ve added to that strong squad that they’ve got. Their defence is just scary. I think Chelsea get in there, and Liverpool. “I think Man United just miss it.“To be fair, I think Spurs will also pick up. All they need is that somebody up there to score a goal. They’ve got strikers, they’ve got a good midfield. “On paper, that defence is good. How they’ve started the way they’ve started, I don’t know. But now, hopefully, they build because you want all the big clubs up there. I think sometimes it just takes a bit of time to get them to settle in. I think the manager’s shown he’s capable of playing good football and everything, and I think for me he still has to trust them. Just a lot of new signings, takes a bit of time, and I’m sure they’ll come good, given some time.”Bale was then asked whether he fancied Tottenham to finish in a Champions League position. He replied:“Hopefully. I think the expectation probably needs to be lowered a little bit, considering that we finished seventh twice in a row.
