A Pennsylvania man was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder after he broke into his ex-wife’s home and shot her five times. Darrell Long, 63, was also convicted of burglary, aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and misdemeanor harassment. According to the Centre Daily Times, the jury took a little more than an hour to reach the verdict following a two-day trial. Lebanon County District Attorney Pier Hess Graf noted that the victim, Dawn Long, had been waiting for accountability. “Since the day of the shooting, March 25, this has been what she has been fixated on and hoping for, and I’m so thankful the jury gave her the verdict that she deserved and that the evidence supported it,” she said. The incident occurred on March 25, 2025, when Long broke into the victim’s residence on N. 7th Street. Graf told PEOPLE, “He finds her asleep on her living room couch alone, obviously no weapon, utterly defenseless. And it’s not enough to shoot her. He wants her to know it was him.” She fought back through five gunshots Graf told PEOPLE that Long struck his ex-wife in the face twice with a .22-caliber pistol before firing the first two shots while she was lying on the couch. “He hits her in the left leg, one bullet goes directly through her knee, lodges, and the other one is more towards the femur area of her left thigh,” she said. And she reaches up with her left hand and he fires. Thankfully, he hits her hand and doesn’t shoot her in the head, but it obliterates her left index finger.” During the struggle, Dawn attempted to disarm him. As she testified in court on September 21, “I grabbed the barrel of the gun because I wanted to get it away from him.” Graf told PEOPLE that at one point, the firearm malfunctioned. “Somehow that magazine became dislodged,” she says. “She sees him on the ground in the middle of all this chaos in the middle of her fighting back … He’s beating and hitting at the gun, yelling at it, saying that it jammed. So, Dawn charges him to finally get it and that’s when he shoots her the fourth time in the right arm and that bullet lodges in her forearm.” Dawn then attempted to crawl toward her bedroom as she was shot a fifth time in the right leg. In a different instance, a man used a Tesla to abuse his ex-wife. PEOPLE reported that once she reached the room, she barricaded the door and used her Apple Watch to place an emergency 911 call. Graf described the scene to the jury as being “like a wounded animal in the middle of a hunt.” She added, “I do think there was an element of wanting to, piece by piece, make her suffer before he ended it. Police later recovered the .22 caliber Walther pistol from his vehicle after he turned himself in at the Pennsylvania State Police Jonestown Barracks. Prosecutors believe the attack was triggered by child support paperwork filed by Dawn in February 2025. “He gets the child support paperwork, and he loses his mind,” Graf told PEOPLE. “And it’s silly to think that something like paying for your child to live would cause you to then try to physically assault and kill your ex-wife, but that was his ultimate trigger.” During the trial, the jury heard audio recordings of calls Long made from the Lebanon County Correctional Facility, per CDT. In these messages, he reportedly said, “I’m glad I shot her,” and “She ain’t high fiving anybody right now.” Graf told PEOPLE, “The last two things that the jury heard [were] [him making] domestic violence jokes that every woman needs to be taught a lesson, that he’s a hero for doing what he did. [That] he did what 99% of men wish they could do. He’s proud of what he did. He still blames the victim for making him shoot her.” According to CDT, Dawn Long underwent several surgeries for her injuries. Dr. Kenneth Taylor, an orthopedic hand surgeon, testified that her left hand would never fully recover due to the fractures sustained during the shooting. Long is scheduled to be sentenced on December 9 before Lebanon County Court of Common Pleas Judge Charles Jones Jr.
