Disney’s Hollywood Studios is getting closer to opening one of the biggest expansions the park has seen in years.Monstropolis, the new Monsters Inc.-themed land currently under construction, still has plenty of work ahead. However, Disney is beginning to reach the stage where some of the smaller details that actually make a theme park land feel finished are starting to appear.One of the latest developments involves the Glob Theater, where Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a permit for new signage.Credit: Erica Lauren, Inside the MagicIt might sound like a relatively minor update compared to building an entire roller coaster, but signage and marquees are typically some of the more visible signs that a project is moving beyond demolition and heavy construction.And in this case, the new marquee is particularly important.Disney Is Getting the Glob Theater ReadyThe Glob Theater is taking over the former Muppet*Vision 3D theater inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios.According to the newly filed permit, Sign Producers Inc. has been contracted to install signage at the theater. Scaffolding around the building was largely removed in August, and supports for the theater’s new marquee are already visible.The completed marquee and clock tower are expected to feature eye-inspired decorations, while a banner will also hang from the tower.Seeing a marquee reach this stage is a good sign for anyone waiting to walk into Monstropolis.There is still a difference between a land looking increasingly finished and actually being ready for guests. Disney has extensive work happening throughout the area, and its biggest attraction isn’t expected to debut alongside everything else.Still, installing permanent signage is one of those construction milestones that changes how a project feels.Instead of looking like an active construction zone filled primarily with temporary walls, scaffolding, equipment, and unfinished structures, pieces of the final guest-facing environment are beginning to take shape.The Glob Theater is becoming an actual Monstropolis venue.A New Show Is Coming to the TheaterWhen Monstropolis opens, the Glob Theater will become home to Welcome to Monstropolis! With Sulley & Mike.The new production will feature Mike and Sulley and include an original song from composer Randy Newman.That makes the theater one of the more interesting pieces of the land’s opening strategy.Disney doesn’t need to wait for every major component of Monstropolis to be completed before it begins allowing guests into the area. In fact, the company has already confirmed that the land will open in phases.Most of Monstropolis is expected to debut first in 2027, while the land’s massive door coaster will open later.That distinction is important when looking at construction progress.Disney could have certain restaurants, shops, entertainment offerings, themed environments, and the Glob Theater ready for visitors while Imagineers continue working on the coaster elsewhere in the land.In other words, guests shouldn’t necessarily expect one enormous opening day where every piece of Monstropolis suddenly becomes available at once.Credit: DisneyMonsters Inc. Land Is Starting to Look Much More RealTheme park construction can sometimes feel like it moves slowly from the outside.For months, guests may see little more than walls, cranes, steel, dirt, scaffolding, and partially completed buildings. Then the project reaches a point where recognizable themed details begin appearing much more quickly.Monstropolis appears to be moving closer to that stage.A permanent marquee doesn’t mean Disney is about to open the gates next week or even next month. There are still many months of work ahead.But it does represent progress.Disney isn’t simply preparing the basic structure of the former Muppet*Vision 3D theater anymore. Imagineers are beginning to install the details guests will actually see when they enter the finished land.Those details matter because Monstropolis has to do more than contain Monsters Inc. attractions.Disney is attempting to make guests feel as though they have entered the monster city seen in Monsters, Inc. (2001).That requires themed architecture, signage, storefronts, environmental details, entertainment, and plenty of smaller visual touches. The Glob Theater marquee is one more piece of that larger transformation.The Door Coaster Remains the Big ProjectOf course, the attraction most Disney fans are waiting for is the door coaster.Disney’s ambitious Monsters Inc. coaster is expected to recreate the famous door-vault sequence from Monsters, Inc.(2001), giving Walt Disney World a major new attraction and Disney’s Hollywood Studios another headlining ride.It’s also the portion of the project that will require additional time.Because Disney has already confirmed a phased opening, guests shouldn’t assume that Monstropolis opening automatically means the coaster will be operating.Instead, Disney appears prepared to introduce the land in stages.That could allow the company to get guests into Monstropolis and begin operating completed experiences rather than keeping an otherwise finished section of Disney’s Hollywood Studios closed while work continues on the coaster.For a park that has already undergone substantial changes to make room for Monstropolis, opening completed portions of the land as soon as they’re ready makes plenty of sense.When Could Monsters Inc. Land Open?Disney has confirmed 2027 for the first phase, but there is still no specific opening date.For now, we’d continue looking toward sometime in mid-to-late 2027 as the most reasonable window for Monstropolis to begin welcoming guests.That is not an announced Disney timeframe beyond the broader 2027 opening, and construction schedules can always shift.The coaster complicates the timeline even further because its later opening means there will effectively be multiple milestones to watch.First, Disney needs to get the main portion of Monstropolis ready.Then comes the eventual debut of the door coaster.That means 2027 could become a particularly interesting year for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with the park potentially introducing its newest land before eventually adding its biggest attraction.Credit: DisneyDisney’s Hollywood Studios Is Getting Closer to a Major ChangeThe latest Glob Theater development doesn’t give us an opening date, but it’s exactly the type of progress fans have been waiting to see.A marquee going up means Disney is working on something guests will see when Monstropolis is actually open.After months of watching the former area transform behind construction walls, those finishing details make the project feel considerably closer.There is still a long way to go. The opening remains many months away, and the door coaster will require even more patience.But Monstropolis isn’t simply a concept or a collection of construction plans anymore.Buildings are taking shape. The Glob Theater is receiving its final identity. Permanent themed elements are appearing. And Disney has a phased opening planned for 2027.For now, mid-to-late 2027 remains the timeframe we’d watch most closely for the first phase of Monsters Inc.
