Former Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel has passed an ownership test as he looks to take up a director role at Shrewsbury.Many professional footballers struggle to step away from the game after retiring, often moving into punditry, coaching or even club ownership.Former Tottenham Hotspur players have followed similar paths. Back in 2025, Gareth Bale was linked with an ownership role at Plymouth Argyle, though nothing materialised. The Welshman later expressed his desire to pursue ownership with his hometown club Cardiff City. The former Spurs star has joined a consortium led by American businessman Scott Davidson in a bid to take over the League Two club, where he could become a director.The former Spurs goalkeeper made 450 Premier League appearances between 1997 and 2015 for Liverpool, Blackburn, Aston Villa and the Lilywhites.Of those 450 appearances, 50 came for Spurs. He was the club’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper during his debut campaign but later moved into a backup role following the arrival of Hugo Lloris. In total, he made 67 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham between 2011 and 2015.Shrewsbury, currently in League Two, confirmed the development in a statement: “Shrewsbury Town can confirm Brad Friedel has successfully passed the owners’ and directors’ tests conducted by the relevant governing bodies.“The latest approval represents another step forward in the proposed takeover process.”Shrewsbury fans welcome Friedel involvementThings are not looking up for Shrewsbury, who sit just two points above the relegation places in League Two, with only one win from eight matches this season.Fans appear open to Friedel’s involvement, while a previous club statement outlined the consortium’s plans.
