Spoilers below.A Different World has not yet been renewed for a second season by Netflix, but the final episodes of the season left the door open for additional storylines with the show’s new cast members, as well as the returning legacy stars from the original series.Deborah Wayne’s love triangle with Shaquille Johnson and Ellington Kendall could only continue, and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree—her parents, Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, could very well find themselves in a love triangle too, should a prominent season 1 star from the original series return to stir things up.Here’s what happened in the final episodes of A Different World.Hazel and Amir finally reconcile—and Amir might give Jalen a second chance.Despite being best friends, Hazel gets a major shock when Amir tells her that he slept with her boyfriend, Jalen, in episode 7. At first, Hazel thinks that Amir is lying about being intimate with Jalen, leading to a rift between the two friends, but by episode 8, the pair finally talks it out and makes up. Hazel also admits that she actually has a boyfriend back home named Roger, who will be transferring to Hillman the following year.A door is left open between Jalen and Amir after Jalen admits to him that he’s never allowed himself to have feelings for another man. “I just never allowed myself to have that kind of bond with another dude before, and I don’t know about you, but maybe we shouldn’t have to give that up,” he says, which leads them to share a kiss. Jalen tells Amir to meet with him at a secret garden during the Light the Night gala, but those plans ultimately do not come to pass: Amir’s probation officer shows up to the gala and informs him that there’s a warrant out for his arrest, stemming from him missing a required check-in due to a student protest.Rashida and Kojo might be over.After feeling pressured by Kojo during the fall semester to have sex, Rashida suggests that they take a break from their relationship. After the holidays, Rashida takes an interest in Andre due to their shared love of anime, but ultimately goes back to Kojo after realizing that he isn’t dating Nneka, the head of the school’s fashion organization.By episode 8, Kojo apologizes for wanting to rush her into sex and reveals that he’s a virgin too, which presents a problem—she tells Deborah that she and Andre had sex during her break from Kojo. But when Rashida realizes that Kojo is supportive of her academic ambitions and wants to stay with her at Hillman over the summer, they finally become intimate. Their bliss doesn’t last—Andre confronts Rashida at the Light the Night gala and demands to know why she would ignore him after they slept together, which Kojo overhears; he leaves the party with Nneka and is quickly interrupted by an ICE agent who demands to see “his papers.”Denise Huxtable could potentially return for the show’s next season.After student protests about the financial cuts conclude and the terms for new agreements at Hillman are negotiated, Dwayne and Whitley finally reconcile and sleep together after months of separation—but Dwayne sneaks away and gives his ex-girlfriend, Denise Huxtable (played by Lisa Bonet in the original series), a call and says that he needs her.Deborah ends the season with Ellington.The ending finally reveals the extent of Deborah and Shaquille’s connection. A year before the events in the show, Deborah lost her virginity to Shaquille, and it wasn’t without drama. After being intimate with each other, the pair attended a warehouse party together that ended in a fire. They both got into serious trouble with both of their families, but Shaquille’s dad confiscated his laptop, phone, and credit card as punishment, causing him to fall out of touch with Deborah. Deborah mistakenly assumed that Shaquille regretted their night together.Communication continues to be a sore spot for the couple. When Deborah asks Shaquille if he’s had sex with anyone else since that incident, he says, “Deborah Wayne, you were then—and you are now—the only one for me.” Shortly after, Deborah finds out that Shaquille slept with her dormmate, Candace, when she finds his sweatshirt in Candace’s pile of laundry, and they break up.At the end-of-the-year Light the Night gala, Amir tells Deborah that Shaquille feels terrible about sleeping with Candace and wants her back. Deborah considers giving him another chance and texts Shaquille, only to receive no answer from him. Shaquille, meanwhile, is seriously considering an offer to leave Hillman. But when Deborah returns to her dorm room, Shaquille is quickly forgotten when she finds Ellington—earlier revealed to be Denise Huxtable’s son—waiting for her with her dorm decorated with rose petals. After he asks her to give their relationship a try, they kiss.
