Celta Vigo have renamed a stand after club legend Iago Aspas ahead of hosting matches at the 2030 World Cup.The former Liverpool striker will also be honoured with a statue outside the entrance to the stadium.Celta have renamed the Tribuna stand after all-time top scorer AspasGettyAspas is Celta’s all-time leading scorer and appearance maker having returned to his boyhood club for a second spell in 2015.How many goals has Iago Aspas scored for Celta Vigo?Either side of a disappointing two years at Anfield, the 39-year-old has scored 223 goals in 578 appearances for the club.In contrast, the ex-Spain international scored just once in 15 matches for Liverpool between 2013 and 2015.The veteran forward signed a new one-year deal with Celta in May through to the end of this season.His legacy has now been immortalised in the stands as well as outside Bailados.The club are have renamed the Tribuna stand after Aspas as part of their redevelopment project.Their home since 1928 is currently being expanded ahead of the 2030 World Cup.Once completed, the capacity will increase from 24,870 to more than 40,000 fans.Ongoing work on the Gol stand had caused fans to speculate it would be the section named after Aspas.A total of 7,000 new seats will be installed once it fully reopens in January, with the partially open stand currently holding just 800 supporters.Aspas will also be honoured with a statue outside the entrance to BalaidosGettyHowever, Aspas’ name will instead adorn the Tribuna, which has been renamed the Iago Aspas Tribuna.Mayor of Vigo Abel Caballero confirmed the decision in a video announcement as he responded to the online speculation.Caballero explained: “Why the Tribuna stand? First, because it is already operational and, therefore, the name is immediate.“Second, because it will be the stand with the largest capacity in Balaídos.“And third, very importantly, because next to the Tribuna stand will be the sculpture that the City Council is going to install for Iago Aspas, right there in front.”He added: “Therefore, everything fits. So the Tribuna stand will immediately be called the Iago Aspas Tribuna stand, because it is already operational.”Celta’s Balaidos will have its capacity increased to more than 40,000 ahead of the 2030 World CupGettyCelta’s stadium renovationWhilst the renovations began last year, work on the Tribuna is not set to begin until later in the season.The stand will be reconstructed, with its capacity increasing from 5,500 seats to 16,000.It will also be moved backwards to accommodate the additional seating.Balaidos has been selected as one of 20 stadiums to be used in Spain, Morocco and Portugal for the 2030 World Cup.The three nations will co-host the tournament alongside opening matches in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay to mark the World Cup’s centenary.Celta’s ground previously hosted matches during the 1982 edition of the tournament, which marks the last time Spain served as hosts.
