Momentum Calls For Greater Construction Accountability After Gżira Scaffolding Collapse

Momentum has called for stronger accountability and tougher enforcement in Malta’s construction industry following Friday’s scaffolding collapse in Gżira, which narrowly missed two passing cars. The party said the incident, which happened on Reggie Miller Street, highlights ongoing concerns over construction site safety and argued that the fact nobody was injured was due to luck rather than effective oversight.According to footage from the scene, a digger appears to have pushed the scaffolding into the road, causing it to collapse moments after one car had passed underneath and just before another came to a stop.Momentum is urging the government to establish a single, properly resourced authority responsible for enforcing safety at construction sites and dangerous structures, replacing what it described as the current fragmented system. The party also reiterated its proposal for an emergency reporting line for dangerous buildings and construction sites, allowing residents to report hazards before they result in serious incidents.Committee member Matthew Agius said the Gżira collapse demonstrated that public safety “cannot be left to chance”.“The people in the car survived because a driver was quick enough to stop, not because anyone protected them. That is not a safety system, it is a lottery,” he said.Momentum added that it will continue advocating for stricter regulation of the construction industry and greater accountability when public safety is put at risk.•
