Kampala: Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba on Sunday declared that NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor “will not re-open without my permission,” hours after security personnel deployed at Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda premises and forced NTV Uganda and Spark TV off air.In a series of posts on X shortly after midnight, Gen Kainerugaba announced that the broadcaster and newspaper were being shut down.“NTV and Monitor are being shut down from today!”“Both NTV and Monitor will not re-open without my permission.”Shortly after the posts, security personnel were deployed at Nation Media Group’s headquarters in Namuwongo and at the Serena Hotel, where part of the broadcaster’s transmission infrastructure is located. By about 5:00 a.m., viewers attempting to access NTV Uganda and Spark TV were met with blank screens and “technical difficulties” messages.Staff inside the media house reported that security officers had sealed off the premises and restricted movement in and out of the compound, while security remained deployed throughout Sunday morning. The shutdown followed several days of escalating criticism by Gen Kainerugaba directed at Nation Media Group journalists and publications on social media, including a post in which he wrote: “In Uganda, I DO NOT believe in a free press! The press should be guided by cadres of the revolution.”By press time, neither the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, the Uganda Police Force nor the Uganda Communications Commission had issued a formal statement explaining the operation or citing any legal order authorising the shutdown. The incident marks one of the most significant actions taken against a Ugandan media house in recent years. The post NTV and Monitor Will Not Re-open Without My Permission — Gen Muhoozi appeared first on The Insider.
