The revised guidance states that the annual influenza vaccine was “voluntary.”The following day, on X, he announced, “The War Department is once again restoring freedom to our Joint Force. We are discarding the mandatory flu vaccine requirement, effective immediately.”Two months later, in June, military personnel have been blind-sided. For many, Hegseth’s lifting of the flu mandate has been perceived as “pure theater” due to the new provisions now included in the policy exceptions (see image below). As a result, for the majority of service members, it will remain mandatory (emphasis mine).Fewer than three weeks following Hegseth’s announcement, the Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps made requests for “exception to policy (ETP)” and Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Anthony Tata has signed off on those requests.Image: Screenshot of Memo Regarding Military Flu Vaccine Exception to PolicyWere all these requests submitted on May 5 as the updated memo indicates? The plausibility of this timeline suggest it may be more than mere coincidence.Conveniently, with many blaming Hegseth, reports started emerging regarding a mid-summer influenza outbreak at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas in previous weeks, affecting over 200 individuals and possibly leading to one fatality. This outbreak raised questions about the timing and nature of the ETP requests made by the military branches.According to one source, an attorney, who spoke anonymously to The Gateway Pundit, this is “clearly an information op, given the dates on the different services’ ETP, with the timing of the articles by New York Times and Washington Post, and amplifiers.”“I view Hegseth as sincere, with a sincere cadre working to right the wrongs, but this is combined arms, deep-state, Big Pharma, perfumed Pentagon princes’ opposition to giving religious exemptions to cash cow vaccines, brought to you via their mouthpieces in the Fourth Estate,” said the anonymous source. With regard to the Pentagon’s opposition to granting religious accommodations, attorney Davis Younts agreed with the source. The retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and former Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer told The Gateway Pundit that he has “grave concerns that these ‘exceptions’ will lead to significant abuses.”He pointed out that the law requires individualized review for every situation when a Religious Accommodation Request is submitted. “However, all of the branches have demonstrated a consistent pattern ignoring the religious freedom of service members.”For him, “This language and approach is not only illogical, but it will likely contribute to continued abuse.”As the situation unfolds, it becomes increasingly clear that the implications of War Secretary Pete Hegseth’s policy shift extend far beyond the immediate lifting of the flu vaccine mandate. The confluence of an influenza outbreak and the subsequent requests for policy exceptions raises critical questions about transparency and accountability in the decision-making processes of the Pentagon.Given the new circumstances, numerous service members have reached out to the author to express their fear of being forced to take the flu shot, particularly when requests for religious accommodation are likely to fail unless someone of significant authority, like the Secretary of War, intervenes to defend their constitutional rights. As voices of concern grow louder, it remains to be seen whether the leadership will genuinely prioritize the rights and well-being of service members or succumb to the pressures of external influences.
