NAIROBI, Kenya Jun 23- The Orange Democratic Movement has officially removed Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as the party’s Secretary General following an internal disciplinary process that culminated in a key meeting held at Chungwa House on Monday. The National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, chaired by ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga and attended by party leader Oburu Oginga, adopted recommendations made by the party’s Internal Disputes Resolution Mechanism (IDRM).According to the NEC resolutions, the disciplinary committee was constituted under Article 51(3)(f) of the ODM constitution to hear complaints against Sifuna in his capacity as Secretary General.“After going through the report and findings of the IDRM under Article 74(2) of the Party constitution, the NEC unanimously resolved to adopt the Committee’s recommendations and endorsed the removal from office of Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna,” the statement signed by Acting Secretary General Catherine Omanyo read. “Effectively, Sen. Sifuna ceases to be the Secretary General of the ODM Party.”The party defended the decision by citing previous findings by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), which emphasized the importance of respecting internal disciplinary mechanisms within political parties.ODM stated that Sifuna had initially moved to the PPDT and obtained orders stopping the party from taking disciplinary action against him. However, the tribunal vacated those orders on March 26, 2026, paving the way for the disciplinary proceedings to continue. The statement further noted that after the IDRM process commenced, Sifuna again sought intervention from the PPDT in an attempt to halt the proceedings.“On April 9, 2026, the Tribunal ruled that the Party was at liberty to proceed with, hear, and determine the disciplinary proceedings against Sen. Sifuna,” the statement said. However, the tribunal reportedly directed ODM not to communicate or implement any decision until applications challenging the process had been heard and determined.ODM further revealed that the IDRM invited Sifuna to appear before the committee, but he requested adjournments on multiple occasions and sought additional details regarding the allegations levelled against him.The party said the requests were granted.According to the NEC resolutions, Sifuna’s lead counsel, Senior Counsel Isaac Okero, later appeared before the committee on April 20, 2026 and informed members that his client would not proceed with the hearing, citing alleged bias within the committee. The IDRM then proceeded to hear the matter ex parte.ODM also cited the PPDT’s position dismissing Sifuna’s complaint and directing the party to conclude the disciplinary process it had initiated.
