First round pick ‘left behind’ with Super Bowl favorite shopping in quarterback bargain basement

The Los Angeles Rams’ decision to draft Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overhaul pick is ageing like milk. With reigning MVP Matthew Stafford at quarterback, as well as Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie on defense thanks to two blockbuster trades, is clearly in win-now mode.Stafford will be heading for a new chapter soonGettySo selecting another passer — and one with major question marks at that — in the first round with plenty of talent on the board was a shock move.At the very least, the man selected would need to be a serviceable backup who could step in if Stafford went down for the trade to be justified right now. That may not be the case.Sean McVay needs a No.2 quarterbackPer The Athletic’s Nate Atkins, Simpson is struggling to distance himself from Stetson Bennett — a fourth-round pick in 2023.“The Rams only had three open practices to watch before they canceled veteran minicamp, but one thing that stood out was that the backup quarterback race is on,” he wrote. “This was how Sean McVay presented it upon the selection of Ty Simpson with the No. 13 pick, and then Stetson Bennett took reps first in the two practices Matthew Stafford missed to manage his back. “Neither Bennett nor Simpson were able to stand out ahead of the other in these moments, as both worked on crossers, slants, outs and other basic routes, and neither produced much down the field. “Bennett did have a lazy out throw that Trent McDuffie picked off, and Simpson overthrew a couple different deeper throws. “It’s just not as simple as it was with Jimmy Garoppolo, who had started 63 games before he became Stafford’s backup the past two seasons. “Los Angeles planned on bringing Garoppolo back even with the plan to draft Simpson, but with Garoppolo leaning toward retirement, time will tell whether Simpson or Bennett are ready to fill a void the Rams consider significant with Stafford’s need to take time off and with the risk from each time Stafford takes a hit.”Simpson may not have time to get his act together if Stafford goes downGettyThe Rams added Garrett to an already formindable defenseGettyGaroppolo could still return and solve the problem, but given Simpson’s struggles head coach Sean McVay may be wishing he had the pick back. The Rams may have to pick up a QB from a dwindling free agent pool or trade for somebody like Mac Jones, who will likely be too expensive.Los Angeles boasts a strong roster and is the Super Bowl favorite, but is is not perfect and one area is of particular concern, especially when fielding a 38-year-old with a history of back problems under center.“The Rams drafted just one offensive lineman this year, despite having four starters entering contract years,” wrote Atkins.“That was third-round Missouri product Keagen Trost, who spent his multi-school college career mostly at right tackle. “The Rams view Trost as a utility man this season with capabilities at tackle, guard and center. But asking him to start multiple games this early on Stafford’s blind side could be a risk.”NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?Three tackles were off the board when the Rams selected Simpson, but bruising guard Olaivavega Ioane went a pick later to the Baltimore Ravens.Blake Miller and Max Iheanachor could also have provided a boost, while there were talented pass-catchers on the board like Makai Lemon and Kenyon Sadiq.McVay has won a Super Bowl in Los Angeles and could well be on the path to a second. But it is easy to wonder if the Simpson pick could come back to haunt an organization slap bang in the middle of its window.A one-year starter, the former Alabama star was always going to take time to find his feet — a luxury not afforded to many in today’s NFL.Stay up to date on all things NFL across our talkSPORT platforms – subscribe to our YouTube channel for the latest news, opinion, exclusive interviews and our daily unfiltered, unscripted show ‘The S* Word, from 8am ET.
