A father from Newport Beach, California, says he fell asleep while driving with his two young children in the backseat. The driver, identified as content creator Jesse Moncur, said he drifted into another car after dozing off behind the wheel. He later shared the experience with his 2.4 million followers in a video that has since gone viral on TikTok.  Moncur says in the video, “I just got in a car, I fell asleep at the wheel. I need to see what happened.” He said the crash happened during what was meant to be his family’s first road trip together. The video shows the family’s morning before the crash, along with footage of what happened afterward. The clip has been viewed more than 933,800 times and has received roughly 88,200 likes and close to 600 comments. The footage shows interactions with the other driver, police, and roadside workers following the crash. Father says he told the other driver he had dozed off Moncur said the trip began around 3:45 a.m., when he, his wife, and their two children left home for the road trip. The video shows him kissing his sons on the forehead before the family prayed together. He said, “I love you. We’re gonna drive,” before his wife led the family in prayer. By 6 a.m., the video shows the children appearing to be awake and eating breakfast, with the family on a desert highway as the sun rose. Moncur said in the video that the crash happened around 7:45 a.m., when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel and drifted sideways into another car and how the subsequent collision woke him up immediately. Following the crash, Moncur said he got out of his vehicle to speak with the other driver, whose face was blurred in the video. According to the footage, the other driver asked, “What happened, man?” Moncur replied, “I just dozed off.” The other driver responded, “Oh really? I’m sorry about that.” Other roadside incidents caught on camera have also drawn attention online, including a dashcam clip of a cyclist confronting a driver after a separate crash. The video shows the front left wheel of Moncur’s white Toyota SUV with visible damage, including a flat tire and a bent rim. The other driver’s car reportedly had to be towed from the scene. Moncur said in the video that everyone involved, including his family and the other driver, was unharmed. A police officer, whose face was also blurred, is shown in the video asking Moncur, “Why did you fall asleep at the wheel?” Moncur replied, “Never done it before, I don’t know.” A roadside worker, wearing a hat identifying them as part of the Clark County Fire Department, asked Moncur if anyone had pain complaints, to which he said no. @jessefunstuff Life is so fragile and I’m grateful everyone was able to walk away from this unscathed. It was a true accident and now I know what I’ll do differently to ensure this doesn’t happen ever again. It was a strange experience to stand outside of the car, look at the damage with my wife and kids in the car, and wonder how it feel if you is someone was badly hurt or if we lost someone. Life is so precious. #pov #family #dadsoftiktok #toddlersoftiktok #baby ♬ original sound – Jesse Moncur The video also shows a roadside worker giving a toy firefighter hat to Moncur’s toddler son, who remained in his car seat throughout the stop. The police officer later told Moncur he would be issued a ticket, saying, “You’re gonna get a ticket. Thank you for being honest, but you gotta stay up whenever you’re driving, dude.” Moncur responded, “Yeah.” Moncur later said, “I’m feeling very grateful to be alive. No one got hurt. I’m grateful everyone was understanding.” He added that the experience made him think more about gratitude, saying his “eyes were opened as to how I could be spending so much more time in gratitude and appreciation.” In the caption of the video, Moncur wrote that the crash was “a true accident” and said he now knows what he will do differently to try to prevent it from happening again. He also wrote that standing outside the car with his wife and children made him reflect on how serious the situation could have been. Unusual vehicle mishaps continue to circulate online, such as a Tesla driver’s odd parking attempt that ended with the car in a public pool. The video drew a range of reactions in the comments section. One commenter suggested, “Always have a coffee candy or energy drink with you on long drives cause those simple things can keep you alert.” Another wrote, “If you are tired while driving, make sure someone is talking to you, or eat some snacks, it will keep you awake so you can avoid micro sleep.” Other commenters questioned why the couple did not adjust their plans during the drive, with one asking, “Why why didn’t y’all just switch seats?” Another commenter wrote, “Dude if your tired you should pull over your family is with you.” A separate commenter related to the situation personally, writing, “My biggest fear when I grow up I zone out a lot.”
