Xander Zayas had a torrid time landing a fight before he signed to face Jaron Ennis. The unified WBA and WBO super welterweight champion locks horns with ‘Boots’ on Saturday night in a fight that promises to produce fireworks at Brooklyn’s Barclays Centre.Zayas and Boots are set to square off on SaturdayZayas insists that negotiations with Boots ran smoothly and were wrapped up within a ‘week and a half’, which is more than can be said for his other attempts at striking a deal elsewhere. The Puerto Rican technician claims that after defeating Abass Baraou in January, he reached out to Josh Kelly and Devin Haney to make a fight, but never heard back from either man. Josh Kelly Discussing his failed attempt at stoking the flames with IBF super welterweight champion Kelly, Zayas told talkSPORT.com: “Before Boots, we were looking at unifying with the other champions. “Sebastian Fundora was getting ready for Keith Thurman, so we couldn’t get him.“Josh Kelly had just fought the same day I fought [Abass Baraou], so we were looking at him. “My team at Top Rank reached out to Matchroom (Kelly’s promoter), and they said they were going to have a meeting to talk about it and that they would reach out to Josh Kelly.“But we never heard anything back from Josh Kelly’s team. “Matchroom just said they’re not giving us an answer, so we just kept it at that.“Then he went on social media saying that they had never got an offer, so we went back one more time, and we never heard anything again.”Devin Haney A fight with Haney also looked to be on the cards earlier this year when Haney’s father and manager, Bill, teased the possibility of his son moving up to 154lbs to face Zayas in pursuit of a world title in a fourth separate division. Zayas claims Kelly didn’t respond after his team reached outMark Robinson/Matchroom BoxingHe claims Haney did the sameGettyBut, in the end, Haney opted to go another route. “Devin doesn’t want to fight these guys. He has been arguing with Ryan [Garcia], Shakur [Stevenson], Keyshawn [Davis] and me. But he’s not fighting any of us.“He didn’t really want it. We called him, we said ‘Give us a number’, and we never heard back. “What can I tell you? I’ve always said yes to these guys.”Haney is currently on the verge of being ordered to defend his WBO welterweight title against No.1-ranked contender Keyshawn Davis, while contact has also been made with Gervonta Davis’ team.Watch Boxing on DAZN*If you click a link in this boxout, we will earn affiliate revenueSign up to DAZN to access the definitive subscription for boxing fans.Upgrade to DAZN Ultimate from just £24.99/month, guaranteeing access to 185+ fights annually, a minimum of 12 pay-per-views at no extra cost, as well as every Lega Serie A match and other elite football access.Alternatively, DAZN Standard is just £15.99/month, with the caveat you will have to pay for pay-per-view events.Click here to sign up.
