Rory McIlroy will get the chance to play at some of his ‘Mount Rushmore’ golf venues following the revamp of the PGA Tour schedule.Details about the long-awaited remodel of golf’s main tour were announced at a news conference on Tuesday as former world number one Tiger Woods explained the changes.McIlroy has won the TOUR Championship three timesGettyPromotions and relegations will be introduced from 2028 alongside two separate tiers of competition.The ‘Championship Series’ will see the world’s best compete in 24 tournaments, including the majors, with 120-man fields and purses worth $20million.The season-ending TOUR Championship is also set to be changed up.In a popular decision for golf fans, that tournament will become matchplay and will be moved to different locations around the USA each year.Since 2004, East Lake in Atlanta has been its traditional home but now, the event’s location will be rotated.According to ESPN, the TOUR Championship will be held at some of the most prestigious courses in the States that have not historically been on the tour schedule.Pine Valley, Cypress Point and Seminole are among the potential sites and are all hugely popular among professionals and should produce brilliant spectacles.Rory McIlroy, a three-time winner of the TOUR Championship, is a member at Seminole and counts Pine Valley and Cypress Point among his Mount Rushmore of venues.“It’s hard, I’ll go four different places,” McIlroy said on a recent edition of the New Heights podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce.“Kingston Heath in Australia, Royal County Down in Northern Ireland, I would do Pine Valley on the East Coast, and Cypress Point.The PGA Tour have announced a major revamp of their competitive structure starting from the 2028 seasonX / PGATOUR“It’s so hard, because I’m leaving out so many great golf courses, but those are my four.“Those sort of old, traditional golf courses that have all the history.“It goes back to growing the game, that’s the cool thing about golf — all these historical courses and all that stuff — but that doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive to then appeal to a different demographic.“I think we can enjoy both within the game.”The PGA Tour are also set to change up their weaker fall schedule and have promised to include more international events.That could see more top American names head to Wentworth for the BMW PGA Championship in September plus the Irish Open and the DP World Tour Playoff events.McIlroy says Cypress Point is among his ‘Mount Rushmore’ golf venuesGettyWorld number two and current Masters champion McIlroy welcomed the news of the PGA Tour’s overhaul.He said: “Today’s announcement is a positive step for professional golf.“As more details emerge, it is encouraging to see the PGA Tour reaffirming the importance of meritocracy and creating a structure that will serve both players and fans well into the future.“I’ve always been proud to compete around the world, and the collaboration between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour is one founded in the betterment of the game globally.“The commitment to elevate some of these historic international tournaments and national opens is incredibly important for the game and something I’m very supportive of.“Over the last few years, golf has faced a period of uncertainty and division, which has not been in the best interests of the players, or the fans of the game.“Today, we are putting the fans first, and I am excited about the future of our sport.”
