Viserys Targaryen (deceased)HBO//HBOViserys succeeded King Jaehaerys Targaryen, his grandfather, when he was chosen by the Lords of Westeros for the Iron Throne. When he ascended the throne, he followed a long and prosperous rule by Jaehaerys and, basically, just tried to hold things down. While Viserys was a decent dude, he wasn’t exactly an exciting or charismatic leader—though he tried his best to keep the peace. When his daughter Rhaenyra was still a child, he named her heir, causing issues within his own reign. Viserys arrived about nine generations before the famous Daenerys Targaryen. He died after suffering from a severe form of leprosy.Daemon TargaryenHBODaemon is the younger brother of King Viserys. While he is well-known for being a great dragonrider and warrior, he has a little bit of that alarming Targaryen tendency to walk the edge of madness. In House of the Dragon, he is first married to Rhea Royce, then to Laena Velaryon, with whom he had two daughters: Baela and Rhaena Targaryen. While Daemon initially vied for the throne against his niece Rhaenyra, he eventually married her after Laena’s death. (She is his third wife while he is her second husband.) Daemon and Rhaenyra have three children together: Viserys II, Aegon II, and the stillborn Visenya.Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowRhaenyra TargaryenHBORhaenyra is the firstborn child of Viserys and his first wife, Aemma Arryn. As such, she has a legitimate claim to the throne, but the age-old issue of her being a woman rears its ugly head. Her uncle, Daemon, is the presumed heir; but Viserys names Rhaenyra his heir instead, citing Aegon’s dream of A Song of Ice and Fire.As an adult, Rhaenyra first marries Laenor Velaryon and welcomes three children—Jacaerys Velaryon, Lucerys Velaryon, and Joffrey Velaryon—with him. (They share Laenor’s name, but they are in fact fathered by Rhaenyra’s lover, Harwin Strong.) After Laenor’s “death,” Rhaenyra marries her uncle, Daemon. They have three children together: Viserys II, Aegon II, and the stillborn Visenya. When her half-brother Aegon II usurps the throne, Rhaenyra is crowned queen in a separate ceremony on Dragonstone.Aegon III and Viserys II TargaryenTheo Whiteman//HBOAegon III and Viserys II are Rhaenyra’s fourth and fifth children. Their father is her husband and uncle, Daemon Targaryen. They’re still young children in the series.Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowLaenor VelaryonHBOLaenor is a skilled warrior and the heir to House Velaryon, and he is also a dragon-rider. Laenor’s father is Corlys Velaryon and his mother was Rhaenys Targaryen, who came very close to sitting on the Iron Throne. Laenor was also Rhaenyra’s first husband (and first cousin) before he faked his death and left Westeros with his lover Qarl. Publicly, he is the father of Jacaerys Velaryon, Lucerys Velaryon, and Joffrey Velaryon, though they were in fact born to Harwin Strong.Jacaerys “Jace” Velaryon (deceased)HBOJacaerys was the firstborn son of Princess Rhaenyra and her first husband, Laenor Velaryon, and therefore followed her in line for the throne. Despite his given name, his real father was Harwin Strong. In the season 3 premiere, Jace dies during the Battle of the Gullet.Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowLucerys “Luke” Velaryon (deceased)HBOLucerys was the second son of Rhaenyra and Laenor, and the younger brother of Jace. He, too, was born out of wedlock, as his real father was Harwin Strong. He and his dragon, Arrax, were killed by Aemond and his dragon, Vhagar, during one dangerous visit to Storm’s End in season 2.Joffrey VelaryonHBOHe is the thirdborn son of Rhaenyra and Laenor Velaryon and the younger brother of Jace and Luke. Like his older siblings, he is also the true son of Harwin Strong. As of season 3, he is staying at the Eyrie in the Vale to avoid harm during the Dance of the Dragons.Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowRhaenys Targaryen (deceased)HBORhaenys was also once in line for the throne, but she was ultimately passed over by the Great Council for her cousin, Viserys. Yes, it’s because she was a woman. (There’s a theme here.) She went on to marry Lord Corlys Velaryon, and together they had two children, Laenor and Laena Velaryon. Rhaenys dies on dragonback in season 2.Corlys VelaryonHBOCorlys is the head of House Velaryon and widower of Rhaenys Targaryen. He had two children with Rhaenys: Laena and Laenor. The Velaryons are not big players in GoT, but in House of the Dragon, it’s clear that Corlys, also known as the Sea Snake, is not someone to be messed with. His island, Driftmark, is known for its naval army. The Velaryons are also a family with dragon-riders and appropriate partners for the Targaryens. Corlys is also the grandfather of Baela and Rhaena, and he has two sons born out of wedlock: Alyn and Addam of Hull.Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowAlyn of HullHBOAlyn is the bastard son of Corlys Velaryon and brother to Addam. He’s a seaman who saved the Sea Snake’s life and sails with him during the Battle of the Gullet in season 3.Addam of HullTheo Whiteman//HBOAddam, Alyn’s brother, is also a bastard son of Corlys. In season 2, he becomes Seasmoke’s rider and pledges himself to Rhaenyra Targaryen.Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowLaena Velaryon (deceased)HBOFirst introduced as a 12-year-old originally sent to marry Viserys Targaryen, Laena Velaryon eventually became the wife of Daemon Targaryen instead. With Daemon, Laena bore two children, Baela and Rhaena. She was also the rider of the dragon Vhagar. Ultimately, Vhagar ended Laena’s life—at her request—as she was struggling with childbirth. It was a brutal end.Baela TargaryenHBOBaela is the daughter of Laena Velaryon and Daemon Targaryen. She, like her mother, is a dragon-rider, bonding with the dragon Moondancer. She was betrothed to her cousin Jacaerys Targaryen, who was meant to be next in line for the throne after his mother, Rhaenyra, but tragically died in the season 3 premiere.Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowRhaena TargaryenHBORhaena Targaryen is the second daughter of Daemon Targaryen and Laena Velaryon. (She is Baela’s little sister.) Prior to the death of Lucerys Velaryon, Rhaena was engaged to her cousin, who was the heir to Driftmark. As of season 3, Rhaena is a newfound dragon-rider, having bonded with the wild dragon Sheepstealer.Alicent HightowerTheo WhitemanAlicent is the daughter of Otto Hightower, the former Hand of the King, and the second wife to Viserys. Alicent was raised in the Red Keep, where she started out as Rhaenyra’s best friend, but she eventually became Rhaenyra’s stepmother. Alicent and Viserys had four children together: Aegon II, Helaena, Aemond, and Daeron. On his deathbed, a barely conscious Viserys spoke of Aegon the Conqueror’s prophetic dream of A Song of Ice and Fire, which Alicent misinterpreted: She believed her husband was telling her that his dying wish was for their son Aegon II to inherit the Iron Throne. This grave misunderstanding only worsens her conflict with Rhaenyra as Aegon II is crowned king.Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowAegon II TargaryenHBOAegon, second of his name, is the firstborn son of Viserys Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. It is argued that he should be king over his half-sister Rhaenyra, given he is the king’s oldest male heir. He marries his younger sister, Helaena Targaryen, and they have twins, Jaehaerys and Jaehaera. In season 2, he is brutally injured and, in season 3, escapes from King’s Landing with Larys Strong.Helaena TargaryenHBOHelaena is Aegon’s younger sister (and wife) and daughter of Viserys and Alicent. She rides the dragon Dreamfyre. While at first she seems to have an odd and eccentric personality, it appears she has the gift of foresight and prophecy. She is the mother of Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, but only Jaehaera survives into season 3.Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowJaehaerys Targaryen (deceased) and Jaehaera TargaryenHBOJaehaerys and Jaehaera were fraternal twins born to Aegon II and Helaena Targaryen. Jaehaerys is murdered in season 2 by the assassins Blood and Cheese, hired by Daemon Targaryen. Jaehaera survives the encounter.Aemond TargaryenHBOAemond is the third child of Viserys and Alicent Hightower, and he’s the younger brother of Aegon and Helaena. He rides the formidable dragon Vhagar following Laena Velaryon’s death.Advertisement - Continue Reading Below
