After weeks of complaints about public water fountains around Sliema, Mayor John Pillow has released a video explaining why some of them keep stopping working, and what the Local Council plans to do about it. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)According to the mayor, the issue isn’t simply down to faulty equipment. Instead, many of the fountains become blocked because people throw dirt, stones and other debris into the water, preventing the pumps from operating properly. Each time this happens, council workers are forced to empty the entire fountain before they can clean out the debris and get it working again, a process that wastes both time and large amounts of water. To reduce the problem, the Sliema Local Council is now planning to install filtration systems in the fountains. The filters are intended to stop dirt and small objects from reaching the pumps, making maintenance easier and helping the fountains remain operational for longer.Pillow acknowledged that vandalism, technical faults and routine maintenance all play a role in the fountains’ condition but stressed that the council remains committed to keeping these public amenities in the best possible state for both residents and visitors. The mayor also encouraged residents to watch the full video to better understand the realities behind maintaining Sliema’s public spaces and the steps currently being taken to restore the affected fountains.Have you noticed any of Sliema’s fountains out of service recently?Video: John Pillow•
