The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be looking ahead to 2027. Aaron Rodgers has now confirmed to return to the Steel City for the 2026 NFL season, but has also revealed that his 22nd season will be his last. Aaron Rodgers is returning to Pittsburgh for one last runGettyTherefore, the Steelers will likely already be considering which direction they will choose to go down for their future without the future Hall of Fame quarterback. In the 2026 NFL Draft, Pittsburgh selected Penn State star Drew Allar with their third-round pick, 76th overall.Already in the QB room is 2025 selection Will Howard, who newly-appointed head coach Mike McCarthy has reportedly taken a big liking to.The 24-year-old spent four seasons of his collegiate career in the Big 12 with Kansas State, where he completed 58.8 percent of his passes for 5,786 passing yards and 48 touchdowns to 25 interceptions. In 2024, he opted to enter the transfer portal, where he signed with Ohio State and became their QB1.In one season, Howard completed 73 percent of his passes for 4,010 yards and 35 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions, leading the Buckeyes to a National Championship. He was then selected in the sixth round with the 185th overall pick of the 2025 draft by the Steelers, but has yet to make his official pro debut. He may never get to take to the field in the Black and Yellow, as reports have emerged that Pittsburgh could be interested in taking Brendan Sorsby in the upcoming NFL Supplemental Draft. Howard could depart to make way for Brendan SorsbyTaking the Texas Tech signal caller, of course, comes with a huge risk due to his off-the-field gambling-related issues, having been caught wagering north of $90,000 on sports, including on his own team when with the Indiana Hoosiers. However, a prospect like Sorsby being available at this point of the off-season is unprecedented, and has a high reward should it pay off.The Steelers selected Penn State QB Drew Allar in the third round of the draftGettyWill Howard has yet to make his NFL debutGetty“It sounds like right now, the Steelers are currently doing their homework,” The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo said on The Yinziders podcast. “It sounds like [the gambling issue] at this point would not be a disqualifier for the Steelers.”If the Steelers are to get the opportunity to take Sorsby, this could spell the end for Howard with the organization before he is even able to take his first snap. This comes as Sorsby has a career pass completion rate of 61.4 percent, and threw 60 touchdowns to just 18 interceptions across his four-year career with Indiana and Cincinnati. Going into the 2026 season, he was tipped to be one of the top QBs to watch, and had been stamped with the potential to be a first-round pick in the 2027 draft. Now, he becomes one of the most hyped prospects in the Supplemental Draft – the first since the 2023 season – with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns also reportedly expressing interest in the 22-year-old.Multiple teams are expected to keep an eye on Brendan Sorsby in the supplemental draftGettyAccording to ESPN insider Pete Thamel, Sorsby’s pro day workout on July 10 is the hottest ticket in town.“I’d expect all 32 [teams] to go because it’s a quarterback and because there’s an ambiguity around him,” Thamel said in an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. “And, because the Supplemental Draft is like a blind pick. You’d be foolish [not to attend] because everyone puts in a blind bid. Even if you have a quarterback, you may put in a fourth-rounder for him. “Everyone has skin in this. … It’s more of a ‘how many [people] do we send?’ than ‘are we going to send anyone to see Brendan Sorsby.’ “Look, quarterbacks are the engine of a multi-billion dollar business – almost a trillion dollar business at this point. … It’s a huge franchise-altering decision if you’re going to do this, so everyone is going to get every single last bit of recon they can on Brendan Sorsby.”Stay up to date on all things NFL across our talkSPORT platforms – subscribe to our YouTube channel for the latest news, opinion, exclusive interviews and our daily unfiltered, unscripted show ‘The S* Word, from 8am ET.
