A sea turtle attempting to nest at Armier this week returned to the sea without laying her eggs after encountering obstacles on the beach. The incident was shared by Nature Trust – FEE Malta’s Wildlife Rescue Team, which said it received a call shortly after 9pm on Thursday reporting that a turtle was trying to nest.Nest coordinators and an official from the Environment and Resources Authority rushed to the site, with one coordinator arriving within minutes. However, by the time they got there, the turtle had already returned to the sea. After examining the tracks left behind, the team discovered that the turtle had been forced to change course twice because of sunbeds placed along the beach.Following the second detour, the turtle abandoned the nesting attempt altogether and headed back into the water.Volunteers monitored the area throughout the night and continued surveillance on subsequent nights in the hope that she would return. So far, she has not.Nature Trust explained that when turtles are unable to nest due to obstacles, human disturbance, animals or unsuitable conditions, they may try again later. However, they may also release their eggs at sea, where they have virtually no chance of survival.Sadly, this is not the first time such an incident has occurred. In 2024, a similar situation unfolded at Golden Bay, where a turtle abandoned a nesting attempt and never returned. The organisation is continuing to monitor the area but warned that the chances of the turtle returning diminish with each passing night. The rescue team also issued a reminder to beachgoers to be mindful of nesting turtles, particularly during the nesting season.Visitors are being encouraged to flatten sandcastles and fill in holes before leaving the beach, as large craters and obstacles can pose serious risks not only to nesting turtles but also to people walking along beaches at night. For conservationists, the abandoned nesting attempt serves as another reminder of how small obstacles can have major consequences for Malta’s protected marine wildlife. What do you make of the matter?•
