The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Monday, June 22nd, 2026, at 2:22 pm local time, at an intermediate to considerable depth of 190. km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) at magnitude 5.3, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Jurm (pop. 23,100) located 49 km from the epicenter, Baharak (pop. 32,600) 65 km away, Ashkasham (pop. 12,100) 69 km away, Ishqoshim (pop. 26,000) 78 km away, Fayzabad (pop. 44,400) 80 km away, Farkhar (pop. 10,500) 88 km away, and Taloqan (pop. 64,300) 120 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt1202–202 km (125–125 mi)202 km (125 mi)II: Very weak shaking1484–484 km (300–300 mi)484 km (300 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (2 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 8 km (5 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Jun 22, 2026 10:22 am (Universal Time)18 minutes ago5.3190 km0 km - This quake49 km S of Jurm, Badakhshan, AfghanistanMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 26 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 357 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 7 or higher: 0.13 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 7.7 years)Mag. 6 or higher: 0.75 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 1.3 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 6.4 quakes per yearMag. 4 or higher: 159 quakes per year (or 13.3 quakes per month)Mag. 3 or higher: 278 quakes per year (or 23.2 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 347 quakes per year (or 28.9 quakes per month)Mag. 1 or higher: 356 quakes per year (or 29.7 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity.
