Very strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake at 32 km depth27 Jun 20:27 UTC: First to report: VolcanoDiscovery after 5 minutes.27 Jun 20:27: Now using data updates from EMSC27 Jun 20:28: Magnitude recalculated from 6.0 to 5.9.27 Jun 20:28: Magnitude recalculated from 5.9 to 6.0.Update Sat, 27 Jun 2026, 20:30Significant magnitude 6.0 quake hits 50 km east of Kuji, Japan early morningThe European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 6.0 quake in Japan near Kuji, Kuji Shi, Iwate, only 8 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Sunday, June 28th, 2026, at 5:21 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 32. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.In Kuji (pop. 34,400) located 50 km from the epicenter, Miyako (pop. 51,200) 73 km away, Hachinohe (pop. 239,000) 79 km away, Misawa (pop. 42,800) 97 km away, Takizawa (pop. 55,600) 114 km away, Morioka (pop. 290,700) 118 km away, Morioka (pop. 290,700) 118 km away, and Hanamaki (pop. 94,700) 141 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake. If you were or still are in this area during the quake help others with your feedback and report it here.Download the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app and get one of the fastest seismic alerts online: Android | iOSI didn't feel itI felt this quakeEarthquake detailsDate & timeJun 27, 2026 20:21:50 UTC - Local time at epicenterSaturday, Jun 27, 2026, at 08:21 pm (Universal Time GMT +0)StatusconfirmedMagnitude6.00Depth32 kmEpicenter latitude / longitude40.2222°N / 142.3613°EIwate, JapanSeismic antipode40.2222°S / 37.639°WQuality17 seismic stationsShaking intensityV Moderate shaking near epicenterFelt3 reportsPrimary data sourceEMSC (European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre)Nearest volcanoOsore-yama (105 km / 65 mi)Weather at epicenter at time of quakeOvercast Clouds 15.8°C (60 F), humidity: 93%, wind: 7 m/s (13 kts) from NNWEstimated seismic energy released6.3 x 1013 joules (17.5 gigawatt hours, equivalent to 15080 tons of TNT or 0.9 atomic bombs!) | equivalent to ONE quake of magnitude 6.0 | about seismic energy9 minutes ago reported feltJun 27, 2026 20:21 GMT / Jun 27, 2026 08:21 pm (Universal Time)Lat / Lng: 40.2222 / 142.3613: Near East Coast OF Honshu, JapanSource: EMSCOther sources: NIED: 6.5 / 52 kmDetail info | Read user reports | You felt it? - Report it!';storedMarkers.push(['quake-23140258',40.22220,142.36130,'9 minutes ago: Mag. 6.0, Near East Coast OF Honshu, Japan',html,'quakes-8-24.png',35,35,17,17,127]); function mkRep(id,notFelt){var nFelt=notFelt||false;var src="https://www.volcanoesandearthquakes.com/app/earthquake-report.php?quakeId="+id;if(nFelt==true){src+="¬Felt=true";}window.open(src,"","status=0,toolbar=0,location=0,directories=0,menubar=0,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,height=400,width=350");} function locationHashChanged(e){-1!=e.oldURL.indexOf("#popupMap")&&closePopup()} window.onhashchange = locationHashChanged; function comment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=(t.dataset.id,document.getElementById("commentForm"));"none"==a.style.display?(t.appendChild(a),a.style.display="block"):a.style.display="none"}function sendComment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=t.parentNode.dataset.id,n=document.getElementById("commentContent"),p=n.value.trim();if(p){var o="id="+a+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId;o+="&comment="+decodeURIComponent(p),mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",o,function(e){e.responseText;alert("Thank you for submitting your comment!"),t.style.display="none",n.value=""})}}function flagReport(e){var t=e.parentNode.dataset.id;if(confirm("Report this as inappropriate?")){var a="id="+t+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&flagAsInappropriate=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",a,function(t){var a=t.responseText;alert(a),e.style.display="none"})}}function likeReport(e){var t="id="+e.parentNode.dataset.id+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&like=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",t,function(t){t.responseText;e.style.opacity=.5})}]]>[smaller] [bigger]Most recent quakes Top 20 past 24 hrs Quakes in JapanNearby placesThe closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Monbetsu-honcho, a town with 11,000 inhabitants in Japan, in 252 km (157 mi) distance north of the epicenter. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt1617–617 km (383–383 mi)617 km (383 mi)II: Very weak shaking1362–362 km (225–225 mi)362 km (225 mi)IV: Light shaking2117–318 km (73–197 mi)217 km (135 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (4 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report!
