NAKURU, Kenya Jun 24 – Kuresoi North Member of Parliament Alfred Mutai has been released on a cash bail of Sh50,000 after appearing in court in connection with a shooting incident that left three people injured in Nakuru County. The legislator, who surrendered to officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Sunday, was also granted an alternative bond of Sh100,000 pending mention of the case after 21 days.Mutai was presented before Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet under a miscellaneous application in which the prosecution sought orders to detain him for three weeks pending completion of investigations before plea taking.According to investigators, the MP allegedly shot and injured three people during a scuffle that broke out at an economic empowerment event organized by Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika last Friday. The prosecution argued that Mutai should remain in custody for 21 days, claiming he was likely to interfere with investigations and could abscond.Investigators further told the court that some of the victims were still receiving treatment in hospital following the incident. However, Magistrate Adet dismissed the prosecution’s application, ruling that there was insufficient evidence to demonstrate that the MP would interfere with witnesses or flee. The court also rejected claims that some of the victims remained hospitalized, noting that the prosecution had failed to provide medical documents to support the assertions. There was drama earlier at Nakuru Central Police Station as supporters and politicians gathered seeking to see the MP before he was escorted to court.Dozens of supporters later camped outside the court precincts, chanting slogans and singing in solidarity until the legislator was released on bail.
