Steam and gas plume from the White Island on 17 June (image: Geonet New Zealand)Since the previous update on 7 April 2026, no ash emissions have been detected at Whakaari/White Island. Gas emissions have remained low to moderate, with recent gas measurements and mainland webcam observations confirming only moderate steam and gas emissions from the active vent. Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions have both declined compared to measurements collected on 23 April 2026.Current observations indicate that the volcano is not erupting and overall activity remains low. Accordingly, the Volcanic Alert Level remains at 2 (moderate to heightened unrest) and the Aviation Colour Code remains Yellow. Although no eruption is currently occurring, the activity could resume with little warning. Any future eruptions are expected to primarily affect the crater area and nearby parts of the island, while significant ashfall on the mainland is considered unlikely.Source: Geonet New Zealand volcano activity update 24 June 2026
