It has finally happened – Giannis Antetokounmpo is no longer a member of the Milwaukee Bucks. After more than a year of continuous speculation, the NBA superstar has gotten his wish and forced a trade to his former Eastern Conference rivals, the Miami Heat. The ‘Greek Freak’ has been traded to the Miami HeatGettyThe blockbuster, and franchise-altering, deal for a top-five player in the NBA involved only the Heat and the Bucks, with multiple players and draft picks involved. The breakdown of the trade package, per ESPN insider Shams Charania, is as follows:Heat receive: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bobby Portis.Bucks receive: Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, 2026 1st round pick (No. 13), unprotected first round picks in 2031 and 2033, pick swap in 2030, second round pick in 2033.The Heat edged out the Boston Celtics to win the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, whose package offering was reportedly headlined by five-time NBA All-Star Jaylen Brown.Ultimately, the writing was on the wall that the 30-year-old wouldn’t be on the Bucks roster when the 2026-27 season rolls around. Antetokounmpo was drafted by the Bucks with the 15th overall pick of the 2013 draft out of Greece, where he was playing for professional side Filathlitikos.Entering the league as a scrawny 18-year-old who lacked muscle, the 6-foot-11 power forward very quickly developed into one of the most devastating forces in the NBA, earning the name the ‘Greek Freak’ and named the NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2017. In his 13 seasons playing in Milwaukee, Antetokounmpo averaged 24.1 points per game, shooting at 55.4 percent from the field, along with 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. The 30-year-old has a stellar list of accolades, having been named an All-Star for the past 10 seasons, as well as being named to the All-NBA First Team on seven occasions, and the All-NBA Second Team twice. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to their second title in franchise history in 2021gettyAntetokounmpo now joins a star-powered front court alongside Bam AdebayoGettyMost notably, he won back-to-back MVP awards in the 2019 and 2020 campaigns, with him also named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in the latter season. But Antetokounmpo’s biggest achievement came in 2021, when he led the Bucks to only their second championship in franchise history, and first since 1971. He was named Finals MVP after averaging 30.2 points, 12.8 rebounds and 5.1 assists in their title-winning post-season run. The Bucks brass tried to keep their superstar happy, and brought in veteran three-point shooter Damian Lillard into the organization in an attempt to compete for a championship. However, the experiment proved to be a bust and their two-year tenure together was plagued by a myriad of injuries to both stars, with Lillard’s time in Milwaukee ending after he suffered a torn Achilles in the first round of the 2025 playoffs. Trade rumors continued to hot up during the 2025-26 season, and have been a mainstay in the media ever since, though the Bucks have now put an end to all of that, doing so by their self-imposed deadline of Tuesday’s first round of the 2026 NBA Draft. The Lillard-Antetokounmpo experiment in Milwaukee didn’t work out, with the Bucks waiving the veteran before the 2025-26 seasonGettyBucks owner was wary of trading for Jaylen BrownAccording to Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin O’Connor, the Bucks chose to do the blockbuster deal with Miami over Boston due to owner Jimmy Haslam – who also owns the NFL franchise Cleveland Browns – having some concerns over how long they would potentially be able to keep Brown. “Sources say Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam was a driving force in taking the Heat deal for Giannis over Boston’s offer,” O’Connor posted to X. “Haslam didn’t want to risk Jaylen Brown wanting out of Milwaukee in a year after dealing with Giannis and Myles Garrett trade demands. Haslam wanted certainty, and the Miami deal provided more of that with more total assets in return to Milwaukee.”Haslam has already engaged in a high-profile trade in June after sending two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to Super Bowl-contending Los Angeles Rams. With Brown, who would have seen a 7% trade kicker activated on his $304 million supermax deal, had he been dealt to the Bucks in exchange for Antetokounmpo, there was no guarantee that the five-time All-Star wouldn’t request a trade himself in a season or two. Furthermore, GM Brad Stevens felt that Brown by himself, along with two first-round picks, was the absolute max package that the Celtics were prepared to put together, ultimately putting them at a disadvantage to Miami’s huge haul. The Bucks brass opted for stability over their future – something they felt Brown wouldn’t provideGettyWith the knowledge that the organization were willing to use him as the centerpiece of a trade, and not that of his teammate Jayson Tatum, this trade proposal may yet have ramifications for Brown’s future with the team. However, the 29-year-old has done nothing but speak highly of Stevens and the organization this off-season when addressing reports that he had perhaps become disgruntled on the team. “A lot of stuff swirling around the Celtics and the organization,” Brown said back in May on his Twitch stream. “I hate that our president of basketball operations even had to respond to this. “Me and Brad have a great relationship. I love Boston. If it was up to me I could play in Boston for the next 10 years.”Ultimately, Haslam’s loss was general manager Pat Riley’s to gain, having secured yet another landmark acquisition down in South Beach, following that of Shaquille O’Neal back in 2004, and perhaps the most notable since that of LeBron James and ‘The Decision’ back in 2010.Thus, a new era begins in South Beach for Antetokounmpo, whose arrival to Erik Spoelstra’s team immediately puts them back into contention in the Eastern Conference as they pursue a fourth NBA title in franchise history. The 31-year-old now forms a star-powered front court alongside that of three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo, who made the headlines last season after scoring 83 points in a game – the second-most in NBA history. For Milwaukee, however, the team will now pivot slightly, though the acquisition of so much draft capital goes a long way into mitigating a full rebuild on their end.Stay up to date on all things NBA across our talkSPORT platforms – subscribe to our YouTube channel for the latest news, opinion, exclusive interviews and our daily unfiltered, unscripted show ‘The S* Word, from 8am ET.
