Conor McGregor tipped to see out UFC contract in 2027 even if he loses to Max Holloway

There is ‘no indication’ Conor McGregor won’t finish his UFC contract regardless of his comeback result against Max Holloway. That’s according to esteemed combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani, who has told talkSPORT he is fully confident McGregor will see out the two fights left in his deal.McGregor vs Holloway headlines UFC 329 on July 11GettyMcGregor returns to the UFC on July 11, more than five years after breaking his leg in his last fight against American Dustin Poirier. The Irishman faces Holloway in the main event of UFC 329, which concludes the promotion’s annual International Fight Week, with Paddy Pimblett also returning on the stacked Las Vegas card.Ahead of his return, McGregor sat down with Helwani on his long-running The Ariel Helwani Show for a rare, in-depth conversation during which he opened up on hitting ‘rock bottom’ after his injury against Poirier. The 37-year-old also surprisingly revealed he already has a second fight booked for his next UFC appearance in April 2027.This naturally led to questions from the MMA world about whether McGregor would even make it out for a second showing, given Holloway is a big favourite to win at UFC 329.Helwani provides latest on McGregorBut Helwani, just weeks after interviewing McGregor, said he would be shocked if that were the case.“No, I think he’s too proud,” Helwani explained to Will Gavin and Master Tesfatsion on talkSPORT’s The S Word when asked if there’s a chance McGregor calls it quits if he loses to Holloway.“Let’s see how it goes, but I think he would chalk it up to maybe the lay-off, Max being in his prime.“He might say [Holloway has] been more active, ‘Alright, let’s get back on the horse and figure this out.’“There’s no indication—to be honest, he could’ve retired a long time ago because of all the money he made.Helwani said he would be ‘shocked’ if McGregor doesn’t complete his UFC contract, even if he loses to HollowayThe S WordMcGregor has vowed to right the wrongs of his last UFC appearance against PoirierGettyThe 37-year-old was carried out on a stretcher after his defeat at UFC 264 and hasn’t fought sinceGetty“And I don’t know how he’s doing financially, but there’s no point in working your way all the way back just to say, ‘Okay, I’m gonna do this once and walk away.’”Helwani concluded: “I personally would be shocked if [he walked away after Holloway].”“He has two fights left on his UFC deal. If he can look good in those two fights, he can command huge amounts of money, but he’s gotta look good in these fights.”Who could McGregor fight after Holloway? As Helwani highlighted, should McGregor go out and roll back the years to defeat Holloway in Sin City, and we’ve seen plenty of upsets in the UFC this year, the Irishman would be set for a monumental 2027.He reportedly snubbed a meeting with Brazilian BMF titleholder Charles Oliveira to face Holloway, so there’s one option.McGregor would, however, most likely demand a title shot if he comes out victorious, setting up a potential championship bout with Justin Gaethje.Gaethje is eager to get his hands on McGregor after upsetting Topuria to win lightweight gold at the White House on June 14GettyGaethje stopped Ilia Topuria at the UFC’s White House show earlier this month to become the new lightweight champion and has said he will attend McGregor vs Holloway with a possible fight against the winner in mind.McGregor told Helwani on his show that he would fancy his chances against Gaethje, who has since explained to Jim Rome that he would love nothing more than to ‘punch Conor McGregor in the face.’The only issue with that match-up is the weight class, as McGregor’s return fight against Holloway takes place at 170lbs in the welterweight division, and it’s unlikely he would be able to cut down to 155lbs.The current welterweight champion is Islam Makhachev, who, ironically, defends his belt against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330.Makhachev is trained by Khabib Nurmagomedov, who submitted McGregor in 2018 in one of the sport’s most famous rivalries, while Garry is the first Irishman since McGregor to compete for a UFC title.McGregor has said he wants to be the first man to win UFC titles across three different divisions, so he could find himself fighting for the 170lbs belt — albeit he puts on a clinic against Holloway.View Tweet: https://x.com/jimrome?ref_src=twsrc%5EtfwUFC ScheduleFor all the upcoming fights and results this year, check out talkSPORT.com’s UFC schedule.Another option could be someone like Pimblett if the Liverpudlian defeats Benoit Saint Denis at UFC 329, or Michael Chandler, who was scheduled to fight McGregor in 2024 until the latter got injured.Essentially, it all depends on how McGregor performs, as most, if not all, of the promotion’s top stars would say yes to fighting ‘The Notorious.’
