TFB Review: Vortex Optics Viper Shotgun Enclosed Micro Green Dot

Wait 5 sec.

Red dots - and green ones, too - have been the future of many firearm platforms in recent years; especially handguns. One of the most clever innovations that I have witnessed from an optics company in recent years is the shotgun dot. The Vortex Optics Viper Shotgun Enclosed Dot has such a clever mounting design that you can fit it on hundreds of shotgun models without the need for gunsmithing. We previously reviewed the red dot on our sister site of AllOutdoor.com. Today, we are going to review the Vortex Optics Viper Shotgun Enclosed Multi-Reticle Micro Green Dot to see how it performs. A Word from Vortex Optics on the Viper Shotgun Enclosed Multi-Reticle Micro Green DotWhile I can regale you with all of my thoughts on this green dot for days, sometimes it is best to get it straight from the horse’s mouth. So, this is what Vortex Optics has to say about their new Viper Shotgun Enclosed Micro Green Dot:“Purpose-built for the fast pace of turkey hunting and wingshooting, the Viper® Shotgun Enclosed Micro Green Dot delivers an ultra-low-profile design and wide field of view for intuitive shooting and superior recoil control. Its enclosed design and integrated universal mount ensures seamless operation and maximum protection against the elements.” Multi-ReticleThe beauty of this green dot is that it is purpose-built for the fast pace of turkey hunting by offering 7 reticle options and 12 brightness settings. This should allow nearly any hunter to quickly adapt to varying sunlight and shooting situations. A more thorough explanation of the multi-reticle can be seen below as presented by Vortex:3 MOA DotPrecise point of aim suited for stationary or slow targets.32 MOA CircleDesigned to roughly match the pattern of a full choke. Vortex Optics Viper Shotgun Enclosed Multi-Reticle Micro Green DotOne of the most common and recurring questions I receive reviewing firearms and their related products is, “what’s in the box?” Meaning, what do you all get with your purchase. This is important because what you do and do not get will dictate what type of accessories you need to additionally buy depending on what you want your end-product or hunting setup to look like. All this being said, this is everything that you will receive:Included in the Box:Rubber CoverCustom ToolCR2032 BatteryLens clothMost Common Mounting Screw Sets Mounting – Vortex Optics Viper Shotgun Enclosed Multi-Reticle Micro Green DotWith having prior experience on the Viper Shotgun Enclosed Dot system, mounting this green version to my shotgun was a breeze. I would be using a Retay/Redfield 12 Gauge semi-auto to go turkey hunting this spring - a platform that mechanically is a bit of a knock-off of a Benelli. For those with varying other shotgun makes/models, a complete list of this green dot’s compatibility can be read HERE.My shotgun had 3 mounting screw holes on top of the receiver in quite arbitrary places. Luckily, with the Viper Shotgun Enclosed Multi-Reticle Micro Green Dot, it can adapt to a wide array of receiver contours and screw patterns. You can simply line up the green dot centrally over the top of your receiver ensuring that the factory drilled holes match the “trench” and rear mounting hole of the green dot. Then, identify the correct thread pattern of screws that you are going to need. For my Retay/Redfield, I needed the M4 x 0.7 screws. Finally, make sure to heed Vortex’s advice inscribed on the green dot of only torquing the screws down to 12 Inch-Lbs (that’s NOT Foot-Lbs, by the way). The last thing you want is to snap off a screw and wreck the red dot, your shotgun, or both. No extra Ugga-Dugga is needed. Sighting the Green Dot InWhen I went to the gun range to get this red dot sighted in for hunting, I brought along some Fiocchi Golden Turkey Shells that were graciously provided to us by Fiocchi for this review and hunt. So, an enormous thank you is in order to them for supporting us and making reviewing products like this financially easier. Give them a look if you happen to need any turkey shells – or other ammunition – throughout the year. Fiocchi Golden Turkey 12 Gauge #5 Shot | SKU: 123TRKC5These functioned flawlessly at the range when it came to feeding, ejecting, and they patterned well (as you’ll soon see). So, thank you, once again, Fiocchi! I had laser boresighted the green dot before I headed to the gun range. So, sighting in this green dot was incredibly easy. I patterned it at 25 yards and within 3 shots I had the red dot exactly where I needed it to be to go turkey hunting. The adjustments on the green dot were easy to make, and the was more than bright enough to be seen on the range. Field Use – Vortex Optics Viper Shotgun Enclosed Multi-Reticle Micro Green DotSo, how did this green dot perform out in the field?... My main objective from the start of this review was to take it turkey hunting and see if I could harvest an Eastern Turkey in Minnesota. This meant early mornings… hiding in lush, green foliage… and hoping I could “talk turkey” with my slate call to pull an adult Tom within firing range. I hunted several mornings before I was able to get some turkeys to show up, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t have visitors or was bored. On a future morning, I had better weather and more chatter in the woods before sunlight. So, it was a promising start to a hunt. I ended up calling in two adult Toms within 30 minutes of legal shooting hours, but when they stepped out from a woodline at 80 yards, they wouldn’t come any closer. They were unamused by my hen decoy even if I was really good at turkey calling. They passed by as quickly as they came. I knew from scouting that my property likely only held two adult male turkeys, and those were it. So, I needed to readjust my hunt. I circled around them after a quick 200-yard forest maneuver. They had found a live hen, which made my decoy look like chump-change. I found myself near a cattle creek, which gave off a little bit of bright morning glare from the water. One of the two Toms cut off with the hen they had found. My lone Eastern Turkey that was left would be my only chance. With some gentle, verbal persuasion of “clucks” and “purrs” on my slate call, I got the last turkey to begin heading my way. I ended up laying prone under some brush to be able to see the approaching turkey, and hopefully execute a shot. Once I felt that the turkey was within an ethical range (40 to 45 yards), I took a gentle breath, exhaled, light trigger press, and BANG!My turkey dropped in its tracks. The bright green 32 MOA circle was my reticle of choice. I had an aiming reference point with the central green dot, and the 32 MOA circle that shrouded it was a nice compliment for sighting at a turkey’s head. Final ThoughtsSo, what are my final thoughts on the Vortex Optics Viper Shotgun Enclosed Multi-Reticle Micro Green Dot?… Overall, this is everything you could ever want in a turkey optic. I’ve leaned this green dot against barbed wire fences, wood posts, trees, across my lap, and even on rocks in a creek. It has never exhibited a zero shift, the dot is easily seen and vibrant, and with the multiple reticle options, you can choose one that is perfect for your hunt or needs. The $499 retail price is a touch spendy, but this is the best shotgun optic in the market right now, in my opinion. So, I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who is searching for shotgun optic.
