Yes, there will be a disk version of GTA 6—but not anytime soon

Wait 5 sec.

Following waves of negativity concerning disk versions of GTA 6, Rockstar has officially confirmed that yes, actual disks will be available, but not leading up to the release. So-called physical boxes are going to contain codes only, with real disks to start releasing sometime after the game launches. As VICE writes, those eager to purchase GTA 6 started flooding Rockstar Support with inquiries regarding physical disk copies of the game, with the company issuing responses today confirming that disks are, indeed, going to come out at some point. “You will be able to acquire a physical copy during the following months,” implying we’ll probably only be able to purchase GTA 6 disks after the actual launch. GTA 6‘s prices start at $79.99. Image via Rockstar Games While Rockstar Games provided no explanation for this move, my assumption is that they’re doing it to prevent accidental leaks, as does often happen when people pre-order disks and get them significantly earlier than everyone else. We’ve seen that time and again with big blockbuster titles, with some folks even going so far as to start streaming their game days or even weeks before the actual release. Rockstar’s past experience with leaks and its reported tight-knit lockdown on its own premises to prevent them implies they’re playing it safe and keeping physical disks unavailable for the time being. Many also speculated that Rockstar is trying to tackle the second-hand market, as every copy redeemed as a code would be unsalvageable, meaning folks would have no way to resell, gift or transfer their purchase. Physical disks (for consoles) are the last bastion of consumer protection and are genuinely the only way people still have any semblance of ownership over the games they buy. Stop Killing Games has been fighting tooth and nail to prevent digital kill switches for a while now, and if a publisher as big as Rockstar decided disks were a thing of the past, I have a feeling most of the industry would follow suit. But, thankfully, that is likely still not the case. Not that they probably wouldn’t love to see it. 0The post Yes, there will be a disk version of GTA 6—but not anytime soon appeared first on Destructoid.
