A cyclist in New York said a driver chased him through a bike lane and then appeared to try to take his bicycle, in an encounter that was captured on video and later shared online. The cyclist posted his footage on Reddit and shared his own account of what led to the confrontation. As shown in the video, the driver nearly hit him while making a right turn. In response, the cyclist said he yelled and gave the side of the driver’s car “a little tap” with his hand, adding that it did not cause any damage. He alleged that the driver then began chasing him down the bike lane for an entire avenue, which prompted him to start recording. In the video, the driver can be seen driving in the bike lane while following the cyclist. At one point, he appeared to speed up, closing the distance between his car and the bicycle. When the cyclist stopped at a red light, the driver got out of his vehicle and confronted him, asking, “What was all that for?” before accusing the cyclist of riding too fast. The recorded confrontation at the red light turned into a struggle Once the driver noticed that the cyclist was recording him, the situation appeared to escalate into a brief struggle as he tried to grab the phone. “Someone film this [expletive],” the cyclist called out to nearby bystanders while the driver repeatedly demanded his phone. The driver then told the cyclist to delete the video. As the cyclist got off his bike, the driver pushed it to the ground while continuing to repeat, “Delete it,” based on what can be seen in the footage. When the cyclist asked why, the driver grabbed the bicycle and appeared to try to take it. The cyclist immediately held onto the bike, and the two briefly struggled over it before the driver eventually let go. Disputes between drivers and cyclists have surfaced online before, including a case where footage showed a cyclist blaming a California driver after another car hit him. As of now, the cyclist has not shared any updates about what happened after the video ended and the driver has not commented. The video sparked reactions as people gave their various opinions, which should not be treated as fact. Some viewers focused on the apparent value of the bicycle involved. “Yooooo, why is this bike $14,500…..actually almost more expensive than the car due to depreciation at this point..,” one person wrote in a comment. Another commenter opined that the driver’s alleged actions could carry serious legal weight. “The second he takes the bike it’s also robbery and considering that bike costs more than the Altima, felony robbery.” One more commenter explained how they said they would have responded in a similar situation. “there would have been blood if he touched my bike, and mine isn’t anywhere near as expensive as this,” the person wrote. Cycling can carry physical risks on its own, as seen when one cyclist suffered injuries after hitting a bear near Pinecrest Lake. One user also pointed to the Howsmydrivingny.nyc site. Searching for the plate visible in the video lists 12 violations, including three bus lane infractions, five parking violations, two red light violations, and two for speeding, along with a remaining balance owed. They pointed out, “Great work there! This attempted assaulter-robber and road-rager has a record of being a not just a scofflaw – but an aggressive bully of a scofflaw.”
