‘I should smack you for that!’: United flight descends into a shouting match over a seat swap

Wait 5 sec.

A United Airlines flight in Arizona appeared to turn tense after a dispute over seating. A flight attendant apparently asked several passengers to switch seats, and at least two of them were said to be unhappy with the request. The disagreement was caught on video by a TikTok user identified as @mommabear_0708. The footage appears to show passengers arguing with one another after an in-flight announcement about seating changes. As this is a TikTok video, it is the poster’s own account of events and should not be treated as verified fact. The video shows a flight attendant asking a man, who was wearing a pink shirt, and his mother-in-law to move to different seats, even though they had apparently purchased seats next to each other. The man was said to be dealing with a knee issue and had a brace, and he did not appear to want to give up his seat. The pilot had to rush to the scene A pilot came on over the loudspeaker and said everyone would have to get off the flight so the plane could be properly re-boarded. The Captain is heard in the clip saying, “Unfortunately, we have a couple of people back there that are not cooperating with the flight attendants, really helping us remove the passengers, uh, that we need so we can safely take off here.” @mommabear_0708 Part 1 of United Airlines drama!!!#fyppp #wildnout #crashout ♬ original sound – mommabear_0708 A woman near the front of the plane apparently became upset over the situation and began saying rude things to the man and his mother-in-law. She could be heard angrily saying, “It’s a seat! Really?” Seating disputes are not the only confrontations to draw attention on United flights, as seen in the case of a passenger who elbowed a flight crew member. The man is heard responding to the woman by saying, “We all have issues, honey.” He also repeats that he has a “bum knee” and says, “Sorry for breathing” several times. Airline employees then appeared to come to speak with the man. He told them he had “paid” to have the seat next to his mother-in-law so he could stretch out and enjoy the flight. Several other passengers also tried to get him to switch seats so the flight could continue. One passenger, wearing a red shirt, asked: “Who else needs to move?” The man in the pink shirt responds, “That’s you right there, brother. That’s you, brother. Yeah, that’s you.” The man in the red shirt also asks, “Are we really going to have something just because you two want to be individuals?” The man in the pink shirt is heard telling the man in the red shirt, “You don’t even work here, bro,” and he apparently tried to end the conversation. He also tells the man to “back up a little bit” several times and says, “Handle your business, homie.” The woman near the front continued berating the passenger and apparently made a comment about his mother. When the man told her his mother was deceased, the woman exclaimed, “That’s why she’s not here!”  The man’s mother-in-law then got up to defend him and screamed at the woman, “I should smack you for that!” The man tried to calm down his mother-in-law while a flight attendant arrived to try to calm the situation. It is unclear whether the passengers had to re-board the plane in the end. A flight attendant is also heard saying, “Everybody seated with their seat belts on,” with a male passenger responding, “Yes, 100%.” Comfort and cleanliness complaints have also gone viral, including one account of a traveler upset by her dirty plane seat. Viewers shared a range of reactions in the comments on the TikTok video. One commenter wrote, “I mean he isn’t obligated to appease other people ,” while another said, “I wish I knew who to root for. ” A third commenter argued, “This is on the airline for not selling their seats properly,” and another added, “Why do we forget flying is a privilege and not a right????” Neither United Airlines nor the passengers involved have commented on the video.
