Confirmed: Temuera Morrison’s Boba Fett Will Return in New Version of Failed Disney+ Series

Star Wars has finally confirmed the return of Temuera Morrison’s Boba Fett. There was a time when Boba Fett was widely considered one of the best Star Wars characters ever, following his brief appearances as the stoic bounty hunter in George Lucas’ original trilogy. The Mandalorian-armored assassin absolutely dominated comic conventions for decades and was regarded as the most “badass” figure from those films, perhaps even more than Darth Vader.Credit: LucasfilmThe History of Boba Fett in Star WarsFett appeared in countless novels and comics in the decades that followed, which now reside under Star Wars Legends (formerly Expanded Universe, a massive collection of spin-off media released before Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012 and which was reclassified in 2014).Talk of a Boba Fett-led series even circulated for years, long before Disney+ arrived. But in 2019, The Mandalorian became the first live-action Star Wars series, with the character Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) essentially replacing the original planet-hopping bounty hunter of very few words. However, in Season 2, Boba Fett made an explosive, crowd-pleasing return, despite previously appearing to have been killed by a sarlacc pit in the film, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983).Credit: LucasfilmRelated: Disney Is Taking ‘Star Wars’ in a New Direction After ‘The Mandalorian’ Failure, Abandons George Lucas EraNew Zealand actor Temuera Morrison took on the role, a fitting choice given that he portrayed bounty hunter Jango Fett and all the clone troopers (as they all share the same genetic template) throughout the Star Wars prequel trilogy,Following his well-received appearance in The Mandalorian Season 2, Boba Fett got his own spinoff titled The Book of Boba Fett (2021), which saw Morrison reprise his role alongside co-star Ming-Na Wen as his partner in crime Fennec Shand. The highly anticipated Disney+ series followed Fett as he became the new crime lord of Jabba the Hutt’s former territory on Tatooine.Credit: LucasfilmHowever, The Book of Boba Fett received mixed reviews due to its storytelling decisions and depiction of the title character, and, more notably, the choice to focus on Din Djarin/The Mandalorian for a substantial part of the story. It remains one of the lowest-rated live-action Star Wars series on the streamer.Since then, Morrison has yet to return as the character, despite there being a number of shows set during the New Republic era: Ahsoka (2023), The Mandalorian Season 3, and Skeleton Crew (2024). He also didn’t appear in the latest theatrical release, The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026).Credit: LucasfilmWill There Be a Second Season of The Book of Boba Fett? There are no plans for a second season of The Book of Boba Fett.Earlier this year, Morrison revealed that he had not been contacted about returning to the franchise and that Lucasfilm has effectively placed Boba Fett on hold. However, the character will return in a brand-new series tied to the Disney+ show.Earlier this month, Marvel Comics announced that it would be releasing a seven-part comic series adaptation titled The Book of Boba Fett. While there’s already a long history of comics centering on the character, every issue in the new series will tie in directly with an episode from the Disney+ series, meaning it’s a full adaptation and not a continuation of any kind.According to the cover art, the comic captures some of the actors’ likenesses (although in-comic artwork can vary).Issue #1 is scheduled to be released on September 9, 2026, with the remaining six issues expected to follow throughout the rest of 2026 and into 2027.It remains to be seen whether Morrison, who has a long history with Star Wars, having played numerous characters across both film and television, will ever return to the role. What are your thoughts on all the live-action Disney+ Star Wars content?
