The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force, has arrested three suspects in connection with the suspected poisoning of seven hyenas in the Kaburabutembero area of Lake Mburo National Park.The arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation conducted on June 21, 2026, in Akayanja Sub-county, Kiruhura District, following reports of the deaths of the protected animals.The suspects have been identified as Kayomberera Steven, 55, Nayamuba Dickens, 40, and Lotee Joseph, 30. According to Statement issued by UWA, Kayomberera Steven and Lotee Joseph are residents of Rwekishwaga Village, while Nayamuba Dickens resides in Rwakobo Village. All three suspects are from Rwakobo Parish in Akayanja Sub-county.Authorities believe the suspects may have been involved in the poisoning that led to the deaths of seven hyenas within the national park, although investigations are still ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.The suspects are currently being held at Kiruhura Central Police Station as law enforcement agencies continue gathering evidence and conducting further inquiries.UWA condemned the suspected killing of the animals, describing it as a serious wildlife crime that threatens Uganda’s biodiversity and conservation efforts.“The Uganda Wildlife Authority remains fully committed to combating wildlife crime and ensuring that those responsible for harming wildlife are brought to justice,” the agency said in a statement.Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda’s key conservation areas, home to a variety of wildlife species, including hyenas, zebras, buffaloes, antelopes, and numerous bird species.
