Pedro Porro has revealed the message he repeatedly gave his Tottenham teammates in the dressing room during the club’s difficult battle against relegation last season. It became clear a few weeks ago that Porro was one of the players De Zerbi was referring to when he said only 10 to 12 members of the current squad would form the core of his Tottenham project, after he was handed a new long-term contract, ending speculation linking him with Real Madrid and Manchester City. The new deal reportedly also makes Porro one of Tottenham’s highest earners, and few supporters would argue he has not deserved it. He was one of the few players who consistently performed during an incredibly difficult campaign, with Spurs surviving relegation by just two points on the final day.And despite not being part of Tottenham’s leadership group last season, Porro did see himself wear the captain’s armband on a few occasions. There is little doubt he could become part of that group next season, given he has always been one of the more vocal figures in Spurs’ backline, while the expected exits of Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario would leave two leadership positions to fill.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramPedro Porro explains the advice he gave Tottenham team-matesHaving played more football than almost anyone else in the squad last season, Porro admitted he tried to keep his team-mates mentally focused throughout Tottenham’s relegation battle.Speaking to La Razon from Spain’s World Cup camp, Porro was asked how he dealt with such a difficult campaign. He replied:“Well, you manage it without changing a thing. Simply by sticking to the routine that’s worked for you. Because when you get caught up in a negative spiral, a dynamic that isn’t working with the team, you want to change things quickly. You end up with three managers in a year.“The truth is that last year didn’t go well for us in the Premier League either. But we won the Europa League.“And that’s about being better prepared mentally. Because you go and play a match and lose, you go and play another and lose, that ends up wearing you down mentally.“[I feel] very mature in that respect, because I told my team-mates: if we get through this, we’ll come out as a stronger team. And hopefully things will go well for us next year.”Roberto De Zerbi is excited to keep working with Pedro PorroWhen Tottenham confirmed Porro’s new contract, De Zerbi made no secret of how highly he rates the right-back.Speaking on the club’s official website, he said: “Pedro is a very important player for us, who has consistently shown his ability to influence matches in both defensive and attacking situations.“As well as his technical quality, I also love his mentality. Every day he wants to work, to learn and to improve, and these are the characteristics that help players reach the highest level.“He understands football in a very intelligent way, and brings energy, intensity and personality to the team. This new contract is good news for everyone at the Club. We believe in Pedro, and I am excited to continue working with him and helping him achieve even more in the coming years.”READ MORE: Mateus Fernandes has a clear preference after talks with both Tottenham and Man UnitedThe post ‘I feel very mature’ – Pedro Porro reveals what he told Tottenham squad during relegation battle appeared first on Spurs Web.
