Jim Furyk insists Patrick Reid is welcome on his Ryder Cup team despite being publicly called out after the 2018 loss in Paris.Reed has not featured at the tournament since that edition, which saw him tell the New York Times he should have been paired with Jordan Spieth after a humbling defeat.Team USA had high hopes in 2018GettyHe was benched twice by Furyk, who is taking the captaincy again in Ireland next year.Reed leads the European tour points list and will return to the PGA Tour in 2027 after leaving LIV Golf as he looks to earn a spot.“We are going to put the best 12 guys, the best team of 12, on this team,” Furyk said at Adare Manor in a news conference to mark the tournament coming up in a year. “If Patrick Reed is one of those, that’s great. It’s been a long time since he’s been in our team room.”Steve Stricker left Reed out for the 2021 win at Whistling Straits and he also missed Team USA’s defeats in Rome and Bethpage Black.Jim Furyk changes USA selection policyFuryk has changed the qualification formula so that U.S. stars only begin earning points at the start of the 2027 season.Reed did play in the 2019 Presidents Cup and was loudly heckled by Australian fans at Royal Melbourne. He would likely be singled out by European fans should he make the cut, although nobody wants a repeat of the ugly scenes as Americans crossed a line last time out.Six players will qualify automatically, with Furyk’s picks completing the 12-man team.“Patrick and I will have that conversation,” Furyk said. “And I’m looking forward to welcoming our best team of 12.”Over the last four team tournaments, Team USA has a woeful 8-26 record in foursomes. The Europeans recorded a massive seven-point victoryAP:Associated PressReed will push to be an automatic selectionAFP“What’s interesting is it’s a recent thing for us in the United States,” Furyk explained. “When I started playing the Ryder Cup, we felt and mathematically at teams, we had an advantage in the foursomes.“At that time we were really struggling in the fourball. So there’s an ebb and a flow. But it’s not an anomaly. There’s some issues. We understand that. Not something I’m very happy with.“I plan on making some changes. I would say, one, as captains, we need to do a better job, not only put the folks into good pairings in good positions but I don’t think we are preparing for those matches in a proper way.“I will promise you, we will be prepared. I’m going to ask this team to do more than any other United States team has in the past. We’ll be prepared. “We’ll be ready to go in that format, and hopefully we can showcase our talent. We have too much depth to have that poor record in alternate shot.”Europe has home advantage looking to extend a winning run. Furyk is aware of his issues, but finding answers will be key if he is to become the first U.S. Ryder Cup captain to win on foreign soil for 30 years.
