Malta Reaffirms Commitment To LGBTIQ+ Rights At High-Level EU Conference

Equality and Civil Rights Minister Rosianne Cutajar has represented Malta at a high-level EU conference in Dublin focused on advancing LGBTIQ+ rights and tackling discrimination across Europe.The conference, held under the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in cooperation with the European Commission, brought together ministers, policymakers, experts and civil society representatives.During her address, Cutajar reaffirmed Malta’s commitment to equality and non-discrimination, arguing that continued political leadership is needed as LGBTIQ+ people across Europe continue to experience discrimination, exclusion and hate.“Equality is not only a legal obligation, but a fundamental European value,” the government said in a statement outlining Malta’s position at the conference.Discussions tackled several issues affecting LGBTIQ+ communities, including the experiences of young people and families online, the inclusion of older LGBTIQ+ people, intersex rights and the creation of safer environments free from discrimination and violence.Malta also participated in a dedicated discussion on intersex rights, sharing its experience in areas including bodily integrity and physical autonomy.Meanwhile, Cutajar met with Ireland’s Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley, on the sidelines of the conference.The two discussed challenges including online hate and misinformation, while exploring further cooperation between Malta and Ireland on equality and human rights.Cutajar said Malta would continue working with its European partners to strengthen equality protections and ensure people can live safely and with dignity.What more would you like to see Malta do to advance LGBTIQ+ equality?•
