Malta’s stock of foreign direct investment reached a massive €493.1 billion by the end of 2025, rising by €13.4 billion in the space of a year.During 2025, net foreign direct investment (FDI) flows into Malta amounted to €10.7 billion, with financial and insurance activities emerging as the overwhelming contributors.In fact, the sector accounted for 98.3% of Malta’s total inward FDI position at the end of the year.EU partners accounted for the largest share of investment coming into Malta.But huge sums were also flowing in the opposite direction.Malta’s net outward direct investment position reached €463.9 billion by December 2025, an increase of €11 billion compared to the previous year.During 2025 alone, outward investment flows amounted to €12.9 billion, mainly through equity and investment fund shares and units.Once again, financial and insurance activities dominated, accounting for a staggering 99.5% of Malta’s outward direct investment position, with most of the investment directed towards EU partners.The figures underline just how heavily Malta’s headline FDI numbers are concentrated within the financial and insurance sector.What do you make of the figures?•
