Michael van Gerwen told he doesn’t deserve Premier League spot amid nightmare season

Wait 5 sec.

Michael van Gerwen shouldn’t be in the 2027 Premier League – and should reject an invite if it comes his way.Thats the view of ex-PDC star and the Dutchman’s close friend Vincent van der Voort, who has commented on MVG’s poor form in 2026.Van Gerwen is yet to reach a PDC quarter-final in 2026, with the Dutchman falling to ninth in the rankingsGettyThe three-time champion of the world’s struggles were compounded by a first-round exit in the World Grand Prix of Darts. And his performances in the big televised events have been well below par – winning just one night in the Premier League this year.He also didn’t make it to Finals Night, and there is a possibility that he drops out of the top 16 by the end of the year, with a lot resting on how he performs at the PDC World Darts Championship. But Van der Voort thinks a rest from the Premier League might actually be a good thing for Van Gerwen. What has been said about Van Gerwen’s form?Speaking to Online Darts, he said: “Of course, if you look at what he has done for the sport and everything, he should be in.“But if you judge it on this year until now, he shouldn’t.“First round in the Masters, last 16 at the UK Open, early exit at the Matchplay and then losing here in the first round. You can’t say he deserves to be in based on that.“Maybe for his career it would actually be better not to play it. Commercially and money-wise, of course, it is a lot of money, but for everything else, the best thing might be to skip it and fully focus on his ranking.”And Van der Voort doesn’t think another fellow Dutchman – Wessel Nijman – should be in the Premier League either. The 26-year-old sits in 12th place in the PDC’s Order of Merit, having won six Players Championship titles, while winning twice on the European Tour.Van Gerwen has won just one PDC major since 2023GettyNijman has won eight titles in 2026, but has struggled in televised eventsGettyBut he is yet to go beyond the fifth round of a televised event in 2026.And for that reason, Van der Voort doesn’t think Nijman would be a wise choice for Premier League selection. He remarked: “At this moment, it’s too early. He hasn’t shown it on the big stage.“The Premier League should be a place for people who have done well on TV. They then get something extra commercially and everything. But Wessel hasn’t been in the quarter-finals of a TV tournament yet.“Maybe this weekend will be his weekend, and then he has to play well in all the other tournaments. But for now, it’s not.“You can’t say to a player who has never been in a semi-final or final of a TV tournament, ‘You’re a Premier League player,’ that’s what I think.”
