I built a map where the internet can rename the world

Wait 5 sec.

I built a website where the internet can rename the world. It’s called WorldVote. The idea is simple: pick a real place on the map, propose a new name, and let everyone vote FOR or AGAINST it. Countries, cities, lakes, rivers, islands, regions and other geographic places can all get their own community-created names. If a proposal reaches the required vote threshold, it wins and becomes the name shown on WorldVote. But there’s a catch: every successful rename makes the next one harder. So a place might be easy to rename the first time, but changing it again requires significantly more support. Over time, every place develops its own history of proposals, failed attempts, successful renames and increasingly difficult battles over what it should be called. Official geographic names are never changed. WorldVote is its own parallel map of what the internet decides places should be called. You can explore the map, vote on existing proposals, or create your own: https://worldvote.org/ I’m curious what happens once enough people start participating. Does the map become clever, ridiculous, political, surprisingly accurate, or complete chaos? Probably all five. If you try it, I’d particularly like to know whether the concept makes sense immediately and whether selecting a place, voting, and proposing a new name feels natural. submitted by /u/No-Disk-7318 [link] [comments]
