Leaning Towards The Classic, Napoleon Solo Works Fast at Belmont

Wait 5 sec.

Espoir USA's Napoleon Solo (Liam's Map) registered his second consecutive fast workout over the Belmont main track Friday morning, going six furlongs in a race-like 1:11 just after the 8 a.m. renovation break. The reigning GI Preakness Stakes hero, a latest runner-up in the GI DraftKings Travers Stakes on Aug. 29, commenced his move well behind a pair of runners from the barn of Rudy Rodriguez, but began to reel in that duo in the lane before going clear along the inside and galloping out strongly while feeling a tap or two of the crop from exercise rider Emily Ellingsworth.“It was kind of a stamina-building breeze,” said trainer Chad Summers. “He started out great, I had him in :13 [seconds for the first eighth], :37 and change, moving right along, but the problem when you breeze on a fresh track when you have a horse as competitive at Napoleon, they kind of want to go get the horses in front of them.“He went and got them, and after that, he was able to go on with his gallop out. The key today was getting that big gallop-out into him–he galloped out a mile and an eighth and that's what we were looking for.”It was the third local breeze for the gray colt, who went five-eighths of a mile in a bullet :58 flat with John Velazquez on Oct. 1.Summers said that the connections have not yet finalized a decision on which championship race Napoleon Solo might end up in, but does feel they will go for the big pot of the Classic over the Dirt Mile.“It's all going to be up to the team. We'll pre-enter in both races, and we'll see,” Summers said. “At this stage, I would be surprised if we didn't run in the Classic.”Also working towards Breeders' Cup engagements at Saratoga Friday morning were 'TDN Rising Star' presented by Hagyard Ways and Means (Practical Joke), who went four furlongs in :48.86 (5/58) for the Filly & Mare Sprint; and fellow 'Rising Star' Cy Fair (Not This Time), who drilled a half-mile in :50.64 (38/58). Last year's Juvenile Turf Sprint heroine is aiming for the Turf Sprint.Facteur Cheval Back To Winning WaysIt had been 31 months since Team Valor International and Gary Barber's Facteur Cheval (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}) had gotten his picture taken in the G1 Dubai Turf, but that streak was snapped on Thursday when the 7-year-old gelding took out a very deep Keeneland allowance over a mile and a sixteenth.Placed in a pair of Italian Group 3 races in June, the blaze-faced bay most recently came from well back to be sixth in the GIII Mint Millions at Kentucky Downs for former trainer Jerome Reynier.“We took him over right after that race,” trainer Mark Casse told the NYRA media office. “[Team Valor principal] Barry [Irwin] had mentioned to us going into yesterday's race that you need to get him into the race. We let [jockey] Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] know you need to be aggressive early on with him and get him into the race and you saw that yesterday. It made the difference. It's a privilege to have that horse in the barn.”Facteur Cheval will be pointed to the Nov. 7 GIII River City Stakes at Churchill Downs. The post Leaning Towards The Classic, Napoleon Solo Works Fast at Belmont appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
