A $200,000 Keeneland September yearling and resold for $550,000 at this year's OBS April Sale, Lael Stables' TANNHAUSER (f, 2, Corniche–Filia, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}) was produced three off the inside with a furlong to race in a one-mile Keeneland grass maiden Saturday afternoon and out-battled Juddmonte homebred Rumana (Tapit) by about 1 1/2 lengths to open her account at first asking. The Virginia-bred, the mount of Jose Ortiz, broke without incident and secured a forward-position at the back of the first flight of runners over turf increasingly affected by precipitation.Full of run but fractionally short of room approaching the stretch as Rumana was beginning to find her best while a touch wide, Tannhauser took a split from between horses and looked on her way to a daylight victory.Rumana, a half-sister to 'TDN Rising Star' Touch of Fire (Constitution) and ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., came off the bridle and looked to have peaked on her run, but found a second wind to make a bit of a race of it in the waning strides.Tannhauser is the 11th winner for her freshman sire (by Quality Road) and interestingly has Australian influences on both sides of her pedigree.Sales history: $200,000 Ylg '25 KEESEP; $550,000 2yo '26 OBSAPR.
