Manchester United 1-1 Tottenham Match Report: 10-man Spurs will be frustrated and relieved

Wait 5 sec.

Tottenham Hotspur extended their winless Premier League run to six games after snatching a dramatic late draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.Three weeks without club football ended on a frustrating note for Roberto De Zerbi‘s men. It was the same Tottenham supporters have seen throughout the season: dominating their opponents for large periods, squandering multiple clear chances and then conceding against the run of play to make life difficult for themselves. The Italian head coach made six changes to his side from their last Premier League game before the international break, handing starts to Marcos Senesi, Destiny Udogie, Lucas Bergvall, Mohammed Kudus and Dominic Solanke, who was surprisingly named captain for the evening.Let’s have a look at our Manchester United 1-1 Tottenham match report.Photo by Jan Kruger/Getty ImagesFirst half: Man United 0-0 TottenhamIt was the usual electrifying start from Tottenham, who completely dismantled the home side in the opening exchanges. United were even booed by their own supporters early on after struggling to cope against a team that had started the game 20th in the Premier League table.Solanke had a golden opportunity to put Tottenham ahead in the opening exchanges. Bergvall pressed high to win possession, and the ball broke kindly for the striker, who found himself with only Senne Lammens to beat and a huge goal to aim at. However, his effort was within the goalkeeper’s reach.Spurs continued to produce some beautiful passages of play, but the finishing let them down again, with Bergvall and Kudus both sending their efforts off target.United’s only real chance of the half came around the 30-minute mark, through a counter-attack when Bryan Mbeumo broke forward and eventually found Amad Diallo, but the winger’s effort failed to beat Antonin Kinsky.Makeshift number 10 Conor Gallagher did a good job of continuously winning the ball back for his side (8 recoveries), but there were moments when Tottenham could have done more with a natural playmaker in that position. Towards the end of the first half, Solanke laid the ball off to Gallagher in a dangerous area, who drove towards goal but took too long to get his shot away, allowing Leny Yoro to recover and poke the ball clear.Second half: Man United 1-1 TottenhamSolanke’s frustrating evening continued after the break when Savio’s bouncing delivery found him in front of goal, only for the striker to send his effort well over the bar.Michael Carrick’s triple substitution around the hour mark – Joshua Zirkzee, Diogo Dalot and debutant Carlos Baleba – gave United a much-needed lift. The hosts became far more involved in the game as Tottenham’s early intensity began to fade. All those missed chances eventually came back to haunt Spurs when Matheus Cunha found space on the left and picked out Mbeumo inside the box. The forward had too much room to turn in front of Van Hecke before firing a low shot beyond Kinsky to give United the lead.Things then took another turn for the worse when Rodrigo Bentancur, barely ten minutes after coming on, received a straight red card for headbutting Luke Shaw – who had sparked the confrontation and managed to escape with only a yellow card, leaving Tottenham with ten men and a goal to chase. With little time left and a numerical disadvantage, Spurs resorted to sending hopeful crosses into the box. Remarkably, it paid off.In the second minute of stoppage time, Solanke beat Lisandro Martinez in the air despite losing his balance, getting just enough contact on Sandro Tonali’s delivery to divert the ball past Lammens and bring Tottenham level. It was a much-needed goal for the Tottenham striker, who otherwise would have faced plenty of criticism for his missed chances throughout the game. Spurs then managed to hold on with ten men to secure a point that would have felt far more satisfying had they taken their earlier opportunities.Spurs Web man of the match: Sandro TonaliREAD MORE: Tottenham player ratings vs Man United as senior 1/10 star lets his side down – Spurs WebThe post Manchester United 1-1 Tottenham Match Report: 10-man Spurs will be frustrated and relieved appeared first on Spurs Web.
