Pep Guardiola has been tipped to appear at the Etihad Stadium for Manchester City’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain next week. This prediction has been made by Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, a close friend of Guardiola’s.Guardiola turned Man City into a trophy-winning machine with the Champions League and several Premier League titles arrivingGettyGuardiola posted on Instagram last week in support of Man City and suggested that he’ll be there to help the club after they were found guilty of all serious financial breaches. He said: “I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever.“I am, always have been, always will be, behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran (Soriano), the players, staff, Enzo (Maresca) and you, our unique supporters.“Let me be clear: we will get through this together. I love you all.”And Balague now believes that the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss will be in attendance against PSG in the Champions League, live on talkSPORT next Wednesday. When asked about this on White and Jordan by Jim White, Balague said: “He’s a bit bored. When he put the Instagram post out, it was himself. He felt he had to say this to the fans.“I’ve got the impression that he would like to be there at the first game at the Etihad.“When he puts this post out, he is backing his friends because they put everything in place for him to arrive and be successful.“And I think he feels that he needs to back them up, and the first game at the Etihad is PSG in the Champions League.”Simon Jordan then put forward his view, as he said: “I think this is admirable of Pep Guardiola because a lot of people are cowards and they run because they don’t want the association.Guardiola made an emotional goodbye to City at the end of last seasonGettyMan City have submitted an appeal and continue to insist their innocence against all chargesGetty“So for him to stick his head above the parapet, some would say is foolish and some would say he is a man of integrity and believes the relationship she has with them is meaningful, and he is going to stand by the people he believes, and there is something to be said for that.”Did Guardiola know anything?Since the independent commission found Man City to be guilty of inflating sponsorship by around £900million, there have been a few articles suggesting that Guardiola’s legacy is tainted.Of course, Man City have submitted an appeal and are adamant that the money they received came from the UAE government and not the owner. But on the suggestion about Guardiola, Balague said: “So, we are at this point with City that everyone goes to the fire, and it’s black and white.“Guardiola asked Mubarak Al Khadoon, two lawyers and Ferran Soriano, and he always got the same answer that everything was okay.“Does he have to investigate? I don’t know. But he is surrounded by friends who brought him over and did a lot to do so without City being where they were, they might not have convinced Pep Guardiola. The time City stand accused of cheating covers two years of Guardiola’s time in the blue half of ManchesterGetty“In the ten years he was in charge, the net spend was the fourth in the Premier League, and for wages, they were either first, second or third, but the gap when they were first wasn’t that big.“So they more or less played with the same money, so to me, Pep is like a jeweller who has been given stones, and he’s made them into diamonds.“I don’t think he had more than two world-class players when he first arrived. [Kevin] De Bruyne wasn’t.”Jordan then made the point that Guardiola was only at the Etihad for two of the years they stand being accused of cheating financially, so the majority of the ‘sham’ sponsorships had already been arranged. And Balague added: “Without that growth, you don’t get Guardiola, but that isn’t his fault.”What happens next?Man City’s appeal has now been lodged, with the process expected to take 12 weeks. From there, the panel have 30 days to release a verdict.Man City will hope that the most serious charges are overturned, leading to a reduced or possibly no punishment. But should they fail, there will be a hearing with another independent commission who will decide the punishment. This could range from a fine to a transfer ban, and to the other end of the spectrum, there are threats of points deductions, expulsion from the league and being stripped of titles.
