Trainer John Grabowski dominated the Finger Lakes jockey standings for three decades before hanging up his tack in 2011 to make the switch to training. While he has done well on the Upstate New York circuit, he had never had a graded stakes winner until this past Saturday, when Dotsy (Tacitus) made him a Grade I winning trainer with an upset victory in the Grade I Frizette Stakes at Belmont, earning him a Win and You're In ticket to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.Grabowski was this week's Gainesway Guest of the Week on the TDN Writers' Room Podcast presented by Keeneland. Grabowski discussed his emotional reaction to the win, saying after the race that the moment was topped only by the birth of his children.“It's amazing,” he said. “It's an amazing feeling. I I'd never thought in my wildest dreams is that I'd ever win a Grade I stakes, let alone any stakes at at Belmont Park. So it's been just incredible. It's been incredible. I'm still on Cloud Nine. It's it's just been an amazing ride and I'm so proud of my filly. She is just a spectacular two-year-old filly and I have a lot lots of hopes and dreams in the future for her.”Grabowski discussed his deep connection to the filly, who he picked out at theFasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale. “I thought it was possible we could afford her. I had about sixty, seventy thousand to spend, and I got her for $37,000. When the hammer went down, I was shaking so hard. I was so excited and I had a hard time signing the slip.”He brought her to Saratoga for her first start, but she flipped and got cast in the paddock stall in a schooling incident. He schooled her eight times before her next start, just to get her over her excitement in the paddock, and she responded with a four-length win in an auction maiden special weight, giving Grabowski his first win as a trainer at Saratoga.Grabowski intended upon running her in an allowance after that, but was told that there would not be any written until November and that his only option was to run in the Grade I Frizette on Oct. 3. She won by 2 3/4 lengths.“The emotions that came out of that race, when she crossed the finish line…I can't explainn it,” he said. “It was the biggest thrill of my life, like I said, other than the birth of my two children.”The “Fastest Horse of the Week” was GI Canadian International winner Arabian Crown, who ran a Beyer 104. The “Fastest Horse of the Week” segment is sponsored by WinStar Farm, home to Constitution, who sired a new Grade I stakes winner last week in American History.Elsewhere on the podcast, which is also sponsored by the PHBA, 1/ST TV, the KTOB, West Point Thoroughbreds, and Sky Racing World, the team of Randy Moss, Bill Finley and Zoe Cadman gave their thoughts about the multitude of Grade I stakes that took place over the weekend, including Hughes in the American Pharoah. To watch the video version of the podcast, click here. For the audio version, click here. The post Grade I Winner Dotsy’s Trainer John Grabowski Joins TDN Writers’ Room appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
